    Quick Answer

Speak with Animals is a 1st-level divination ritual for bards, druids, and rangers (and warlocks in 2024). For 10 minutes you can understand and talk with beasts. At minimum, a beast can tell you about nearby places and monsters, and anything it has seen or sensed in the past day. It does not make beasts friendly or obedient. Cast as a ritual, it takes 11 minutes and uses no spell slot.

    Overview

Speak with Animals is a 1st-level divination spell that turns every beast into a possible witness. Bards and druids can cast it from 1st level, and rangers from 2nd level in the 2014 rules.

The spell does not make animals smart. How much a beast knows is limited by its intelligence. A wolf with Intelligence 3 will not describe a noble's coat of arms. But every beast can tell you about nearby locations and monsters, and what it has perceived in the past day. That makes it a strong tracking and scouting tool.

It is not a charm. Beasts keep their own attitude toward you. You might persuade one to do a small favor, but that is up to the DM. It also only works on beasts, so owlbears, worgs, and other monstrosities do not count.

    When NOT to Use This

    • •The creature is not a beast. Monstrosities like owlbears and worgs, and other types, are not covered.
    • •You need a beast to obey you. The spell only lets you talk. Use Animal Friendship or Dominate Beast for control.
    • •You need answers about things beasts would not notice or understand, such as a written message.
    • •In combat, unless one quick sentence will change the fight. Most beasts in a fight are not in a mood to chat.

    Spell Slot Efficiency

    MetricAssessment
Slot EfficiencyFree as a ritual for bards and druids. 2014 rangers must spend a slot.
Action EconomyOne action to cast, or 11 minutes as a ritual. It is an exploration spell.
Opportunity CostA spell known for 2014 bards and rangers. For druids, a prepared spell that can be swapped daily.

When worth the slot: Tracking, wilderness travel, investigating a scene with animals nearby, and avoiding ambushes.

When NOT worth the slot: Urban adventures with no animals around, or campaigns that rarely leave the dungeon.

    Pro Tips

Tip #1: Ask about the past day.

Why it works: The spell promises at least what a beast has perceived within the past day. "Who came down this road since yesterday?" is a question it can answer.

This avoids the mistake of: Asking about events from last month, which the spell does not cover.

Tip #2: Ask simple, sensory questions.

Why it works: Beasts describe what they saw, heard, and smelled. "How many smelled like smoke?" works better than "Were they cultists?"

This avoids the mistake of: Expecting human concepts like names, factions, or plans.

Tip #3: Bring food or offer help.

Why it works: The spell does not change a beast's attitude. A hungry dog is more helpful after a meal, and the DM decides whether it will do a small favor.

This avoids the mistake of: Treating every beast as a willing informant.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    Using it on monstrosities.

Why it's bad: The spell lets you talk with beasts. Owlbears and worgs are monstrosities, so the spell does not help.

Do this instead: Check creature type in the stat block. Worgs speak Goblin and Worg, so Comprehend Languages or a translator may help.

    Thinking it charms the animal.

Why it's bad: A hostile or frightened animal stays hostile or frightened. Talking is not control.

Do this instead: Calm it first with Animal Handling or Animal Friendship, then talk.

Expecting detailed answers from simple beasts.

Why it's bad: Knowledge is limited by intelligence. Many beasts have Intelligence 2 or 3.

Do this instead: Ask several animals the same simple question and compare answers.

    Usage Tips

    • •Worked example: a 3rd-level druid tracks a group of bandits through a forest. She finds a raven near the trail and casts Speak with Animals as a ritual. It takes 11 minutes and uses no slot.
    • •She asks: "Did people pass here since yesterday?" The raven saw five humans with horses heading toward the river this morning. That is within the past day, which the spell covers.
    • •She asks how far the river is and whether anything dangerous lives there. Beasts can always share nearby locations and monsters.
    • •She asks the raven to fly ahead and watch. That is a favor, and the DM decides if it agrees.
    • •The spell lasts 10 minutes, so she can question a second animal she meets before it ends.

    Rules Notes

    • •You can understand and speak with beasts for 10 minutes. It needs no concentration.
    • •A beast's knowledge is limited by its intelligence.
    • •At minimum, beasts can tell you about nearby locations and monsters, including what they perceived in the past day.
    • •You might persuade a beast to do a small favor, at the DM's discretion.
    • •It only affects communication with beasts, not other creature types.
    • •2014 rangers have no Ritual Casting feature, so they must spend a slot. Bards ritual-cast spells they know, and druids ritual-cast spells they have prepared.

    Synergies

    • •Animal Friendship: Charm the beast so it is friendly, then talk.
    • •Animal Messenger: Talk with a Tiny beast first to plan, then send it with a message.
    • •Commune with Nature: Learn the land, then question the local animals for recent details.
    • •Locate Animals or Plants: Find the right beast to question.

    Anti-Patterns

    • •Interrogating a beast like a prisoner. Most just leave.
    • •Relying on it for complex information, such as reading maps or recognizing people by name.
    • •Spending a 1st-level slot on it when you could cast it as a ritual.

    Tactical Modules

    • •Trail Witness. When to use: Tracking a target in the wild. Synergy: Ask birds and small mammals near the trail what passed in the last day.
    • •Ambush Check. When to use: Before entering a forest or cave. Synergy: Ask local animals about nearby monsters and where they lair.
    • •Guard Dog Talk. When to use: A guard animal blocks your way. Synergy: Offer food and talk, so it does not raise an alarm.

    Countermeasures

    • •Threat: The beast is hostile — Response: Calm it with Animal Handling or Animal Friendship first. Fallback: Find another animal.
    • •Threat: The beast knows nothing useful — Response: Ask about the past day and nearby monsters, which the spell guarantees. Fallback: Use Commune with Nature or tracking.
    • •Threat: The target is not a beast — Response: Use Comprehend Languages or Tongues if it has a language. Fallback: Use Detect Thoughts on intelligent creatures.

Speak with Animals in the 2024 Rules

The 2024 Speak with Animals keeps the same 10-minute duration and ritual tag, and adds two things. You can use any of the Influence action's skill options with beasts while it lasts. And the text now says most beasts have little to say about topics beyond survival or companionship, though every beast can still tell you about nearby places and monsters and what it perceived in the past day.

The class list adds warlocks. Druids always have it prepared through the Druidic feature. Forest gnomes always have it prepared and can cast it without a slot a number of times equal to their proficiency bonus per long rest.

Ritual rules changed too. In 2024, any caster can ritual-cast a ritual spell they have prepared. Rangers can now cast Speak with Animals as a ritual if it is prepared.
