    Quick Answer

Remove Curse is a 3rd-level abjuration spell for Clerics, Paladins, Warlocks, and Wizards. You touch one creature or object, and every curse affecting it ends. If the object is a cursed magic item, the item stays cursed, but its owner's attunement breaks so they can take it off or throw it away. It takes an action, needs no material component, and is instantaneous.

    Overview

Remove Curse is the party's answer to effects that don't wear off. Mummy rot, lycanthropy, a rakshasa's touch, a cursed axe you won't part with: each of these calls itself a curse in its rules text, and each one ends when this spell touches the victim.

There is no save and no ability check. It ends all curses on the target, not just one, which is its main edge over Greater Restoration, and it needs no material component.

The limit is the word "curse." The spell doesn't touch diseases, poison, ordinary charm, or most hit point maximum loss. Read the effect first and check whether it is described as a curse.

    When NOT to Use This

    • •The problem is a disease or the poisoned, blinded, deafened, or paralyzed condition. That is Lesser Restoration.
    • •The problem is a lost chunk of hit point maximum from something that isn't a curse, like a vampire's bite. A long rest or Greater Restoration handles those.
    • •You want to destroy a cursed item. The spell only frees its owner. The item stays cursed.
    • •The curse is a story curse your DM built. The 2024 rules let the DM decide how Remove Curse interacts with it, up to only suppressing it for a while.

    Spell Slot Efficiency

    MetricAssessment
Slot EfficiencyHigh when you need it. One cast ends every curse on the target.
Action EconomyOne action, usually out of combat.
Opportunity CostA 3rd-level slot that could have been a combat spell. No material cost, no concentration.

When NOT worth the slot: Short curses that will end in a minute anyway, like a Bestow Curse cast with a 3rd-level slot (concentration, up to 1 minute).

    Upcasting

Remove Curse has no higher-level effect. Use a 3rd-level slot.

    Pro Tips

Tip #1: Cast it before healing a mummy rot victim.

Why it works: A creature cursed with mummy rot can't regain hit points. Healing spells cast before the curse ends do nothing.

This avoids the mistake of: Burning a Cure Wounds slot on an ally who can't benefit from it.

Tip #2: One casting clears a stack of curses.

Why it works: The spell ends all curses affecting the creature. A character with mummy rot and a Bestow Curse needs one Remove Curse, but two Greater Restorations.

This avoids the mistake of: Paying 100 gp of diamond dust for Greater Restoration when a free 3rd-level spell does more.

Tip #3: Identify unknown armor and weapons before attuning.

Why it works: Armor of Vulnerability's curse is revealed by Identify or by attuning, and Identify is cheaper. Most cursed items hide better: the 2024 rules say most ways of identifying an item, including Identify, fail to reveal a curse.

This avoids the mistake of: Attuning first and spending a 3rd-level slot to undo it.

Tip #4: Keep a scroll or a temple in reach before dungeons with cursers.

Why it works: Characters below 5th level can't cast a 3rd-level spell, so a low-level mummy or werewolf adventure needs a plan for afterward.

This avoids the mistake of: Leaving a tomb with a curse eating someone's maximum hit points and no way to stop it.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Trying to cure a disease with it

Why it's bad: Diseases aren't curses. An otyugh's or death dog's disease is a job for Lesser Restoration.

Do this instead: If the effect says "curse," use this spell. If it says "disease" or "poisoned," use Lesser Restoration.

Thinking it destroys a cursed item

Why it's bad: For a cursed magic item, the curse remains. The spell breaks the owner's attunement so they can remove or discard it.

Do this instead: Cast it, then get the item off the character before anyone attunes to it again.

Expecting it to give back lost hit point maximum (2014)

Why it's bad: Mummy rot's 2014 text says the curse lasts until removed, but it doesn't say whether the maximum it already took comes back. That is a DM ruling, not rules text.

Do this instead: Ask your DM. If the loss stays, Greater Restoration can end one effect reducing a hit point maximum.

    Usage Tips

    • •Mummy rot, 2014. A mummy's Rotting Fist (+5) hits AC 16 on 11 or higher, 50% of the time, then forces a DC 12 Constitution save that a +2 bonus fails 45% of the time (9 or lower). Each fist attack curses about 22.5% of the time (0.5 × 0.45). A cursed character can't regain hit points and loses 10 (3d6) maximum hit points every 24 hours. A 5th-level fighter with 44 maximum hit points loses about 42 of them in four days.
    • •Mummy rot, 2024. The 2024 mummy makes two Rotting Fist attacks, and any hit curses with no save, so expect more cursed characters. Against AC 16, at least one fist hits 75% of the time (1 − 0.5 × 0.5). The curse also stops the maximum from returning on a long rest. Once Remove Curse ends it, the normal 2024 long rest rule restores the maximum. The mummy lord's 2024 curse is harsher: the victim gains no benefit from a long rest at all while cursed.
    • •Lycanthropy. A werewolf's bite curses a humanoid on a failed DC 12 Constitution save, in both editions. The 2014 bite (+4) hits AC 16 45% of the time and a +2 Con save fails 45% of the time, so each bite curses about 20% of the time. The 2014 SRD calls it "werewolf lycanthropy" and gives no further rules. In 2024, a cursed creature that drops to 0 hit points becomes a werewolf under the DM's control with 10 hit points. Remove Curse ends it in both editions. The same goes for the wererat, wereboar, weretiger, and werebear.
    • •Rakshasa. A rakshasa's attacks (2014 Claw, 2024 Cursed Touch) curse on a hit with no save. The target gains no benefit from short or long rests until the curse is lifted. The 2024 rakshasa makes three +10 Cursed Touch attacks. Against AC 18 each hits on 8 or higher, 65% of the time, so at least one lands about 96% of the time (1 − 0.35³). Plan on Remove Curse after any rakshasa fight.
    • •Spells that end with it. Bestow Curse ends (its 2014 text says so, and the 2024 curse rules say the same). A Geas ends, and a creature whose memory was changed by Modify Memory gets its true memory back. Those two spells say so in their own text in both editions.
    • •Cursed items. In the SRD, Armor of Vulnerability and the Shield of Missile Attraction curse you on attunement until you are targeted by Remove Curse or similar magic, and taking them off doesn't help. Demon Armor can't be taken off until then. The Berserker Axe curses you through attunement, and while cursed you are unwilling to part with it.
    • •Prevention beats the cure. Protection from Evil and Good gives undead and fiend attacks disadvantage, so fewer cursing hits land.

    Rules Notes

    • •An effect counts as a curse when its rules text calls it one. The 2014 SRD has no general definition of a curse. The 2024 rules glossary says curses can be removed by Remove Curse, Greater Restoration, or other magic that explicitly ends curses.
    • •2014 madness rules say Remove Curse might also work, depending on the source of the madness.

    Remove Curse vs. Greater Restoration

    Remove CurseGreater Restoration
    Level3rd5th
MaterialNoneDiamond dust worth 100 gp, consumed
Curses endedAll on one creature or objectOne curse per casting
Cursed item attunementBreaks itEnds it (counts as a curse)
Other usesNoneCharm, petrification, ability score or hit point maximum reduction, or exhaustion

Greater Restoration is the wider tool. Remove Curse is cheaper and clears everything at once when the problem is purely curses.

    Synergies

    • •Lesser Restoration: Covers the diseases and conditions Remove Curse doesn't.
    • •Cure Wounds: Cast it after Remove Curse on a mummy rot victim, since the curse blocks healing.
    • •Dispel Evil and Good: Ends possession and charm from the planar types. In 2024, it also ends Demonic Possession, along with any magic that removes a curse.

    Anti-Patterns

    • •Removing a cursed item's attunement and then letting another party member attune to it.
    • •Spending it on a 1-minute Bestow Curse that will end on its own.

    Tactical Modules

    • •Tomb aftermath: After a mummy fight, cast Remove Curse on each cursed character first, then heal.
    • •Werewolf hunt: Track who failed a bite save. In 2024, clear lycanthropy before anyone drops to 0 hit points in the next fight.

    Countermeasures

    • •Threat: The curse returns every time the mummy hits. Response: Kill it first and cure later. Fallback: Ward the front-liner with Protection from Evil and Good.
    • •Threat: No one can cast 3rd-level spells yet. Response: Find a temple or a spell scroll. Fallback: Mummy rot costs maximum hit points every 24 hours, so move fast.
    • •Threat: A story curse ignores the spell. Response: Ask what would break it. The 2024 rules suggest a narrative curse usually ends by symbolically righting the wrong. Fallback: Cast it anyway; the 2024 rules allow it to suppress the effect for a time.

Remove Curse in the 2024 Rules

The spell itself is unchanged: a level 3 abjuration for Clerics, Paladins, Warlocks, and Wizards, an Action, touch range, V and S components, instantaneous. It still ends all curses on one creature or object and breaks attunement to a cursed magic item without ending the item's curse.

The rules around it changed. The 2024 rules glossary adds a "Curses" entry: the effect that confers a curse defines what it does, and Remove Curse and Greater Restoration can remove curses. The 2024 DM rules cover cursed creatures (the DM might decide a mummy can be destroyed permanently only by casting Remove Curse on its corpse), narrative curses (the spell might only suppress them), and environmental curses like Demonic Possession, which any magic that removes a curse also ends.

The 2024 SRD also includes Hex, whose text says "You place a curse on a creature." By that wording, Remove Curse ends a Hex on its target. Many 2024 monsters curse more often: the mummy curses on every hit with no save, the werewolf's curse turns the victim into a werewolf at 0 hit points, and the rakshasa curses with three touches a turn. The 2024 deva, planetar, and solar can cast Remove Curse with their Divine Aid bonus action.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does Remove Curse do in 5e?

It ends every curse affecting one creature or object you touch. A cursed magic item keeps its curse, but its owner's attunement ends so they can remove or discard it.

Does Remove Curse cure mummy rot?

Yes, in both editions. The 2014 mummy's stat block names Remove Curse directly, and the 2024 Rotting Fist is a curse. In 2024 the lost maximum returns on the next long rest once the curse is gone; in 2014 that is a DM ruling.

    Does Remove Curse cure lycanthropy?

Yes. The werewolf's bite is a curse in both editions, and the spell ends all curses on the target.

Does Remove Curse destroy a cursed item?

No. The item keeps its curse, and anyone who attunes to it later is cursed again. The spell only breaks the current owner's attunement.

    Does Remove Curse cure diseases?

No. Diseases aren't curses. Use Lesser Restoration in 2014. In 2024, the otyugh's and death dog's diseases are written as the Poisoned condition, which Lesser Restoration also ends.

What is the difference between Remove Curse and Greater Restoration?

Remove Curse is 3rd level, needs no material, and ends all curses on the target. Greater Restoration is 5th level, consumes 100 gp of diamond dust, and ends one curse per casting, but it can instead end charm, petrification, ability score or hit point maximum reduction, or a level of exhaustion.

Does Remove Curse end Bestow Curse?

Yes. The 2014 Bestow Curse text says Remove Curse ends it, even the 9th-level version that lasts until dispelled. The 2024 DM rules on curses say the same.

Who can cast Remove Curse in 5e?

Clerics, Paladins, Warlocks, and Wizards, in both the 2014 and 2024 SRD. Clerics, Warlocks, and Wizards can cast 3rd-level spells from 5th level. Paladins get them at 9th level.
