Greataxe or greatsword?
The greataxe rolls one d12 (1–12, average 6.5). The greatsword rolls 2d6 (2–12, average 7). The greatsword is slightly better on average and much steadier; the greataxe is more likely to roll its maximum (8.3% against 2.8%). On a critical hit you double the dice, so a greataxe crit is 2d12.
What uses a d12 in D&D 5e
- •Hit die: barbarian, the only class with a d12. 12 + Con at 1st level, then 1d12 or a fixed 7 + Con per level.
- •Weapons (SRD): greataxe and lance deal 1d12.
- •Poison Spray: 1d12 poison damage, scaling to 4d12 at level 17.
- •Critical hits: a crit doubles the damage dice, so the d12 is the die that crits hardest on a single weapon.
Compare whole attacks in the damage calculator, or roll a mixed pool like 1d12+1d6+3 in the main dice roller.
