Running a Giant Owl fight this week? Loreify records your session and writes the recap, including every monster, NPC and loot drop your party ran into.

Giant Owl 5e: Stats, Flyby Riders and the 2024 Celestial Owl

A giant owl is a CR 1/4 Large flier with AC 12, 19 hit points, a 60-foot fly speed, 120-foot darkvision and Flyby: it doesn't provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy's reach. It understands Common, Elvish and Sylvan, so it's usually an ally, a messenger or a mount rather than a monster. The 2024 rules (SRD 5.2.1) change what it is: the giant owl is now a Celestial that casts Detect Evil and Good, Detect Magic and Clairvoyance, which also means Wild Shape, Polymorph and Speak with Animals no longer apply to it.

The ordinary owl is a Tiny CR 0 bird with 1 hit point whose talons deal 1 damage. The giant owl keeps its senses and Flyby and adds real size: 19 hit points, a talon strike for 8 (2d6 + 1) and Intelligence 8. Keen Hearing and Sight gives it Advantage on Perception checks that use sight or hearing, which adds 5 to its passive score: effectively 20 for anything it can see or hear. Nothing sneaks up on a 2014 giant owl.

The 2024 owl is a minor celestial agent. It can sense undead, fiends and the other creature types Detect Evil and Good covers, see magic auras, and once a day watch a distant place through Clairvoyance (a 10-minute casting, so it's for scouting, not combat). The type change has consequences:

    • •No Wild Shape or Polymorph. Both target Beast forms. A 2014 druid can become a giant owl from level 8 (it has a fly speed). A 2024 druid can't, and Polymorph can't turn anyone into one.
    • •No Speak with Animals or Animal Friendship. Both affect Beasts only. Talk to a 2024 giant owl in Common and it understands you. It can't speak Common back, so the conversation runs one way unless someone at the table knows Celestial.
    • •Detect Evil and Good finds it. A party member scanning for celestials will notice a 2024 giant owl watching them within 30 feet.

    How Giant Owls Fight

Swoop, strike, leave. The giant owl flies in, attacks, and spends the rest of its 60 feet flying away without provoking, every turn. The 2014 talons hit AC 15 on a 12 or better (45%) for 8 damage, about 3.6 per round. The 2024 talons hit on an 11 or better (50%) for 7, about 3.5. Low damage, but a creature that never stands still and never takes an opportunity attack is hard to pin down.

Fight in the dark. Darkvision 120 feet and Stealth +6 (2024) mean a giant owl in a night forest sees everything and is seen by almost nothing. It picks targets carrying light, because those are the creatures it can see from farthest away.

Escape upward. At 19 hit points it can't trade blows. A wounded owl flies 60 feet straight up. Only ranged attacks and spells follow it there.

The Giant Owl as a Mount or Ally

A willing creature at least one size larger than its rider, with suitable anatomy, can serve as a mount. The Large giant owl carries a Medium or Small rider. Here's how Flyby interacts with the mounted combat rules:

    • •Controlled mount. You can control a mount only if it has been trained to accept a rider. A controlled mount acts on your turn and can only Dash, Disengage or Dodge. Flyby means the owl doesn't need Disengage to leave melee, so it can Dash instead: 120 feet of flight, and leaving reach provokes no opportunity attacks.
    • •Independent mount. The 2014 rules say intelligent creatures, such as dragons, act independently, but don't define "intelligent." Whether a giant owl with Intelligence 8 (10 in 2024) that understands Common counts is a DM ruling; treating it as independent is reasonable. An independent mount keeps its own initiative and can attack with its talons. On your turn you attack from its back; on its turn it strikes and flies off.
    • •Opportunity attacks. The 2014 rules say that if a mount provokes an opportunity attack, the attacker can target the mount or the rider. Flyby stops the owl from provoking when it flies out of reach. The rider isn't moving with their own movement, so the common reading is that nobody gets that attack, but confirm it with your DM.
    • •Falling. A flying creature that is knocked prone, or whose speed drops to 0, falls unless it can hover. The giant owl can't hover. If it's knocked prone or grappled 60 feet up, the rider comes down too.

Find Steed doesn't list the giant owl in either edition, and the giant owl is not a Find Familiar form. Under the 2014 rules, Conjure Animals can summon eight CR 1/4 beasts, giant owls included; they're fey while summoned and you give them commands. That's eight Flyby attackers for up to an hour of concentration.

    Running a Giant Owl Encounter

Two giant owls attacking four level 1 characters are 100 XP: Low under the 2024 budget and Easy under the 2014 guidelines used by our encounter calculator. Four giant owls against four level 2 characters (200 XP) are Low in 2024 and Medium in 2014.

Hostile giant owls are rare. A neutral, intelligent creature has reasons to fight: protecting a nest, defending a druid grove, or acting for a celestial patron in 2024. Use them as guardians that warn and swoop before they kill. When they're losing, they leave.

    How Players Beat Giant Owls

    • •Bring it down. Anything that knocks it prone or drops its speed to 0 makes it fall. Falling damage does more than most level 1 attacks.
    • •Shoot it. AC 12 and 19 hit points. A bow at +5 hits 70% of the time.
    • •Out-think it, don't out-see it. You won't sneak past it. Talk to it instead: it understands Common in both editions. In 2014, Speak with Animals lets it answer.
    • •Use the right spells. Against a 2014 giant owl, Animal Friendship fails because its Intelligence is 4 or higher. Against a 2024 giant owl, beast-only spells fail entirely. Faerie Fire works on either and gives everyone Advantage against a flier that would otherwise be hard to see.

    Giant Owl Encounter Ideas

The night courier. An elven town sends messages between watchtowers by giant owl, each rider wearing a lantern. One owl came back without its rider. The owl understands everything the party says, can't speak, and leads them to where its rider fell.

The temple's watcher. A 2024 giant owl roosts in the bell tower of a ruined shrine. It uses Detect Evil and Good every night and has spotted the vampire spawn in the crypt below. It can't explain this. It just keeps diving at anyone who heads for the crypt door.

The borrowed wings. The party needs to cross a mountain pass before the snow closes it. A druid circle will lend them four giant owls for one flight if they first deal with the griffon that has been taking the circle's eggs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What CR is a giant owl in 5e?

CR 1/4, worth 50 XP, in both the 2014 and 2024 rules.

Can you ride a giant owl in 5e?

Yes. It is Large, so a Medium or Small creature can ride it if it is willing. You can control it only if it's trained to accept a rider; otherwise it acts independently on its own initiative.

Is the giant owl a celestial in 5e?

In the 2024 rules, yes: it is a Large Celestial with resistance to necrotic and radiant damage and three spells. In the 2014 rules it is a Large Beast.

Can a druid Wild Shape into a giant owl?

In the 2014 rules, from druid level 8, because it has a fly speed. In the 2024 rules no, because Wild Shape uses Beast forms and the 2024 giant owl is a Celestial.

Does Flyby protect the rider of a giant owl?

The owl doesn't provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy's reach. The rules don't address the rider directly; since a rider carried along isn't using their own movement, most DMs rule the rider doesn't provoke either.
