Running a Giant Lizard fight this week? Loreify records your session and writes the recap, including every monster, NPC and loot drop your party ran into.

Giant Lizard 5e: Stats, Wall-Crawling and Underground Mounts

A giant lizard is a CR 1/4 Large beast with AC 12, 19 hit points, a climb speed and a single +4 bite for 6 piercing damage. On paper it's a plain animal. What makes it interesting is where it can stand: the 2024 version (SRD 5.2.1) gains Spider Climb, a 40-foot walk and climb speed and 60-foot darkvision, so it can run along a cave ceiling and drop onto the back of the party. As a Large CR 1/4 beast, it also works as a mount for Medium riders and an early Wild Shape form.

The ordinary lizard is Tiny, has 2 hit points and bites for 1. The giant lizard is a different class of creature: 19 hit points, Strength 15 and a 1d8 bite. Its 2014 senses are weak, though: darkvision reaches only 30 feet and passive Perception is 10, so it is poor at noticing a party before the party notices it.

The bite and the defenses are identical. Everything else got faster and better at moving. Spider Climb lets it climb difficult surfaces, including ceilings, without an ability check. A 2014 giant lizard can climb walls at full speed, but nothing in its stat block lets it hang upside down. DM ruling, not rules text: keep the 2014 lizard on walls and floors.

    How Giant Lizards Fight

The bite alone isn't scary. +4 against AC 16 hits on a 12 or better, 45% of the time, for 6 damage: about 2.7 damage per round. Even against AC 12 it's 65% and about 3.9. A giant lizard won't kill a level 1 character in one bite, and against an armored target it misses more often than it hits.

Position is the weapon. A 2024 giant lizard in a cave with a 15-foot ceiling moves 40 feet across the roof, past the fighter, and comes down next to the wizard. Melee characters with 5-foot reach can't hit a creature clinging to a ceiling well above them, so they spend their turn repositioning. Play it as an ambusher: start on the ceiling in the dark beyond the torchlight (its darkvision sees 60 feet), let the party walk under it, then go for whoever is in the back.

Retreat up, not away. At 19 hit points, a lizard that has taken a hit or two climbs back to the ceiling and out of reach. It has no ranged threat, so it does this to survive, not to win. A party that ignores it to fight something else gets bitten again later.

Giant Lizards as Mounts and Wild Shape Forms

As a mount. A willing creature at least one size larger than its rider, with suitable anatomy, can be a mount in both editions. The Large giant lizard carries a Medium or Small rider. You can only control a mount that has been trained to accept a rider; a controlled mount moves as you direct and can take only the Dash, Disengage or Dodge action. Whether a 2024 lizard's Spider Climb works with a rider on its back is not covered by the rules text. DM ruling, not rules text: allow it on walls but call for the rider to make a DC 10 Dexterity save or fall if the lizard goes fully upside down.

As a Wild Shape. The giant lizard is CR 1/4 with no fly or swim speed, so a level 2 druid can take its form in both editions. In 2014 you use its 19 hit points; in 2024 you keep your own and gain temporary hit points equal to your druid level. The 2024 form brings Spider Climb, which makes it a strong scouting shape for climbing a tower wall or crossing a chasm along its roof.

Polymorph can turn any creature with a CR or level of 1/4 or higher into a giant lizard. For a 4th-level spell, the 2024 version's ceiling-walking is the reason to pick it over a bigger beast.

    Running a Giant Lizard Encounter

For four level 1 characters, the 2024 Low budget is 200 XP, so two giant lizards (100 XP) or four (200 XP) are both Low. The 2014 guidelines in our encounter calculator put two lizards at Easy, three at Hard and four at Deadly once the group multiplier is applied. For level 2 characters, four lizards are Low under 2024 rules and Medium under 2014.

The 2014 multiplier overrates them. Four giant lizards deal about 11 damage per round between them against AC 16, and only if all four reach the front line. Use two or three as a fight for a level 1 party, or one as a mount for something with real teeth: a kobold or goblin rider on a 2024 lizard can hang on a cavern wall and shoot from above.

    How Players Beat Giant Lizards

    • •Light the ceiling. An ambush from above only works in the dark. Throw a torch ahead or hold a light high before walking under an unlit roof. The 2014 lizard's darkvision reaches only 30 feet, so it can't pick out a target in the dark any farther away than that.
    • •Shoot it off the wall. AC 12 is easy to hit. Bows and cantrips hit about 65% of the time with a +4 bonus.
    • •Target Wisdom. Its Wisdom is 10 (+0) with no save proficiency. Animal Friendship charms it for 24 hours on a failed save (its Intelligence of 2 is under the 2014 spell's cap of 3).
    • •Knock it down. Thunderwave pushes a creature 10 feet on a failed Constitution save. Its Constitution save is only +1.
    • •Make friends. With Intelligence 2, a lizard charmed by Animal Friendship and fed afterward is a plausible new pet, or a mount.

    Giant Lizard Encounter Ideas

The lamplighter's tunnel. An old mining tunnel was lit with oil lamps every 30 feet. Someone has stopped refilling them. Three 2024 giant lizards nest on the ceiling between the last two working lamps, and they drop on anything that walks past.

The caravan without horses. A desert caravan uses giant lizards as pack animals because they climb the canyon walls where horses can't. One lizard bolted with the strongbox still strapped to its back. The party has to track it up a cliff and coax it down, not kill it.

The temple wall. A ruined temple's inner walls are carved with a puzzle that can only be read from the ceiling. A druid who can Wild Shape into a 2024 giant lizard reads it in a minute. Everyone else needs a rope, a ladder or a very patient wizard.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What CR is a giant lizard in 5e?

CR 1/4, worth 50 XP, in both the 2014 and 2024 rules.

Can a giant lizard climb on ceilings?

The 2024 giant lizard can: its Spider Climb trait lets it climb difficult surfaces, including ceilings, without an ability check. The 2014 giant lizard has a 30-foot climb speed but no Spider Climb.

Can a giant lizard be a mount?

Yes. It is Large, so a Medium or Small creature can ride it if it is willing. You can control it only if it has been trained to accept a rider.

What level can a druid Wild Shape into a giant lizard?

Level 2 in both editions. It is CR 1/4 and has no fly or swim speed.

What changed for the giant lizard in 2024?

It gained Spider Climb, a Dexterity save of +3, a 40-foot walk and climb speed (up from 30) and 60-foot darkvision (up from 30). AC, hit points and the bite are the same.
