Owl 5e: Stats, the Owl Familiar and Owl Wild Shape

An owl is a CR 0 Tiny beast with AC 11, 1 hit point, a 60-foot fly speed, 120-foot darkvision and the Flyby trait: it doesn't provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy's reach. That combination makes it one of the strongest Find Familiar forms. An owl familiar can fly in, take the Help action to give an ally Advantage, and fly out without being hit. The 2024 rules (SRD 5.2.1) keep Flyby, raise its Perception and Stealth to +5, and drop the 2014 Keen Hearing and Sight trait.

Its listed passive Perception is 13, but that number hides the owl's real strength. Keen Hearing and Sight gives it Advantage on Perception checks that rely on hearing or sight, and Advantage adds 5 to a passive score. Against anything it could see or hear, a 2014 owl's passive Perception is 18. Add darkvision out to 120 feet and you have the best night watch in the SRD for 10 XP.

The 2024 owl is the better hider and the worse lookout. Stealth +5 means a 2024 owl that tries to Hide (a DC 15 Stealth check in the 2024 rules) succeeds on a 10 or better, 55% of the time, against 45% for a +3 owl. Its passive Perception drops from an effective 18 to a flat 15. Flyby, the trait that makes the owl worth taking, is unchanged.

The Owl Familiar: Rules and Tactics

Find Familiar lists the owl by name in both SRDs. The familiar uses the owl's statistics but is a Celestial, Fey or Fiend (your choice) instead of a Beast. It obeys you, rolls its own initiative, can't attack, and can deliver your touch-range spells with its reaction while within 100 feet of you.

The rules that change between editions:

    • β€’Seeing through its eyes. In 2014 this takes your action, and until the start of your next turn you are blind and deaf with regard to your own senses. In 2024 it's a Bonus Action with no such drawback in the spell text. Either way you gain the familiar's special senses, so a caster without darkvision sees 120 feet into the dark through an owl.
    • β€’Who can cast it. Wizards in both SRDs, and warlocks with Pact of the Chain. In 2024 a level 2 druid can spend a spell slot or a use of Wild Shape to cast it through Wild Companion (the familiar is Fey and vanishes at the end of a Long Rest).
    • β€’Carrying things. A 2024 familiar drops whatever it was carrying when it hits 0 hit points or is dismissed. An owl's Strength is 3, so it isn't carrying much anyway.

The Flyby Help. This is why people pick the owl. A familiar can't attack, but it can take the Help action. In combat the owl flies up to an enemy, Helps, and flies away on the same turn:

    1. β€’Move up to 30 feet to a space within 5 feet of the enemy.
    2. β€’Take the Help action. The next attack roll one of your allies makes against that enemy (before the start of the owl's next turn) has Advantage.
    3. β€’Move the remaining 30 feet away. Flyby means no opportunity attack.

The owl's turn-to-turn window covers exactly one turn of every other creature, so the Help works wherever the owl falls in initiative, as long as the ally attacks that enemy before the owl acts again.

How much is Advantage worth? A rogue with +5 to hit against AC 15 hits on a 10 or better: 55%. With Advantage that becomes 1 βˆ’ 0.45 Γ— 0.45, about 80%. Advantage also turns on Sneak Attack. For a level 5 rogue that's an extra 3d6 (10.5 average) riding on a 25-point jump in hit chance, every round, from a 1st-level ritual.

The risks. The owl has 1 hit point and AC 11. It's safe from opportunity attacks, not from being targeted. An enemy that readies an attack for when the owl comes in, or any area spell, kills it. Getting it back takes an hour and 10 gp of incense. How fast enemies react is your call as DM. An Intelligence 5 ogre might keep swinging at the rogue; an enemy mage will target the owl or ready an attack for its next pass.

Outside combat. Use the owl as a night scout. Darkvision 120 feet, flight and a hide-able Tiny body let it check the next cave, the far side of a wall or the camp perimeter. With 2014 rules, keep it perched as a sentry: a passive 18 for sight and hearing catches most sneaking creatures before they reach camp. Your character won't sense what it sees unless they're looking through its eyes, but it can report telepathically from up to 100 feet.

Owl Wild Shape, Polymorph and Animal Messenger

Wild Shape. The owl has a fly speed, so a druid can't take the form until level 8 in either edition. At that level most druids want something bigger for combat, but a Tiny flier with 120-foot darkvision is still the better scouting form.

    • β€’2014: the druid has the owl's 1 hit point, and anything that hits drops it out of the form (excess damage carries over). The druid gains the owl's 120-foot darkvision and Flyby.
    • β€’2024: the druid keeps its own hit points, gains 8 temporary hit points at level 8, and can still speak. A 2024 druid in owl form can fly 60 feet over a battlefield, land, and change back with a Bonus Action.

Polymorph. Any creature can be turned into an owl, since it's CR 0. On an ally that's an escape hatch: a fighter who's about to be swarmed becomes an owl and flies 60 feet away without provoking. In 2014 the form has 1 hit point, so the fighter reverts after one hit, with any excess damage carrying over. In 2024 the target keeps its hit points and gets 1 temporary hit point, so the same applies. On an enemy, an owl is a harmless form until the caster's concentration ends or the owl takes a hit.

Animal Messenger. The 2nd-level spell (a ritual) sends a Tiny beast to deliver a message of up to 25 words. A flying messenger covers about 50 miles every 24 hours, twice the speed of a ground animal. An owl is the obvious pick, and in 2024 the spell can only force a CR 0 beast like the owl to save; anything with a higher CR automatically succeeds. Our guide to Animal Messenger has the rest of the rules.

    How Owls Fight

A wild owl doesn't fight anything bigger than a mouse. Its +3 Talons deal 1 slashing damage, and against AC 14 it hits 50% of the time. Played as a creature, an owl:

    • β€’Watches. It perches 60 feet up with 120-foot darkvision and sees the party long before they see it.
    • β€’Flies off. With Flyby, even an owl caught in melee leaves without provoking.
    • β€’Hides. In 2024, Stealth +5 in a dark forest canopy beats a passive Perception of 13 on a roll of 8 or higher (65%).

That makes the owl a story tool, not a combat one. The questions it raises are "who sent that owl?" and "how long has it been watching?"

Running Owls as a DM: Encounters and Watchers

An owl is worth 10 XP. It doesn't belong in a combat budget. If you want birds that can hurt, the SRD has two better options:

    • β€’A flock. Reskin a swarm of ravens (CR 1/4, 50 XP, fly 50 feet) as owls swooping out of a dark barn. The 2024 version even deafens its target with a DC 10 Wisdom save, which plays well as screeching. Four swarms are a Low-difficulty fight for a level 1 party under the 2024 rules (200 XP against a 200 XP Low budget). Run the 2014 math in our encounter calculator.
    • β€’A big one. The giant owl is a Large CR 1/4 creature that understands Common, Elvish and Sylvan and hits for 7 or 8. In 2024 it's a Celestial that can cast spells, not a Beast, which makes it a good messenger from a god or a forest power.

The best uses of an ordinary owl are as eyes for someone else:

    • β€’The enemy wizard's familiar. It sits on the ruined tower across the valley and watches the party make camp. With 120-foot darkvision it sees their fire, their watch rotation and who sleeps in armor.
    • β€’The druid circle's lookout. Druids of a forest grove send owls to watch the roads at night, and they know when anyone crosses into the woods.
    • β€’The omen. An owl that lands on a coffin, or stares at one party member every night, is a hook. It costs you nothing to describe and gives the players something to chase.

How Players Beat an Owl Scout

    • β€’Notice it. In 2024, an owl watching from cover has Stealth +5. A ranger or druid with good Perception has a fair chance; a passive 12 doesn't.
    • β€’Check its type. A familiar is a Celestial, Fey or Fiend, not a Beast. Detect Evil and Good senses it within 30 feet. A wild owl stays invisible to that spell, which is itself an answer.
    • β€’Shoot it. AC 11 and 1 hit point. Any attack that hits kills it. The trick is getting a line of sight to a bird in a dark canopy 60 feet up. Faerie Fire outlines it if it fails a Dexterity save in the cube.
    • β€’Talk to it. Speak with Animals works on a wild owl. A familiar isn't a Beast, so the spell doesn't apply, which also tells you something.
    • β€’Make it lose you. The owl's darkvision has a range of 120 feet and its hearing is good. Moving through tunnels or buildings breaks its line of sight better than darkness does.

    Owl Encounter Ideas

The owl post. A frontier town has no road messenger. Letters go by owl, through a druid who casts Animal Messenger as a ritual every morning. Someone has started intercepting the owls. The party finds dead birds along the north road and a hunting blind with a crossbow and a pile of unread letters, one of them addressed to a party member.

The watcher on the tower. Every night for a week, an owl perches on the same broken tower and watches the party's camp. Detect Evil and Good shows it's a Fey. It belongs to a druid who lost a relative to the party's patron and wants to know if the party is the same kind of people before deciding what to do.

The barn. A farmer begs the party to clear out "demon birds" from his barn. It's a swarm of owls (use the swarm of ravens stat block) nesting there because something in the loft is drawing rats: a giant rat nest and the half-eaten body of the farmhand who went missing. The owls aren't the problem. They're the warning.

If your party's familiar has a name and a personality three campaigns later, it deserves notes. Loreify can record your sessions and keep track of the NPCs and creatures the party met.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can an owl familiar use the Help action?

Yes. A familiar can't attack but can take other actions, including Help. With Flyby, an owl familiar can fly in, Help an ally attack an enemy within 5 feet of it, and fly out without provoking an opportunity attack.

Does an owl have darkvision in 5e?

Yes, out to 120 feet in both the 2014 and 2024 stat blocks. A caster looking through an owl familiar's eyes gets that darkvision.

What level can a druid Wild Shape into an owl?

Level 8 in both editions, because the owl has a fly speed. Before level 8, a druid can't take any form with flight.

What changed for the owl in the 2024 rules?

Perception and Stealth went from +3 to +5, passive Perception from 13 to 15, and the Keen Hearing and Sight trait was removed. AC, hit points, speed, darkvision and Flyby are the same.

How much XP is an owl worth?

10 XP. It's CR 0 in both editions.
