Giant Crab 5e: Stats, Claw Grapples and Beach Ambushes
A giant crab is a CR 1/8 Medium beast with AC 15, 13 hit points, a 30-foot walk and swim speed, 30-foot blindsight and one attack: a +3 claw that deals 4 bludgeoning damage and grapples the target (escape DC 11). It has two claws and can hold a different creature in each. Its damage is low, so the threat is the grapple: a crab that drags a character into the surf turns a beach walk into an underwater fight. The 2024 rules (SRD 5.2.1) keep the numbers almost unchanged but limit the grapple to Medium or smaller targets.
Your players will remember this fight. Will you? Loreify turns your session audio into notes, NPC lists and quotes in 5-10 minutes.

Compare it with the ordinary crab: a Tiny CR 0 beast with AC 11, 2 hit points and a +0 claw for 1 damage. The giant version keeps the shell-and-claws idea and scales everything that matters. AC 15 is the same as a goblin in leather and a shield, which is high for 25 XP. Blindsight 30 feet means darkness, fog and murky water do nothing to it within that range. Its Intelligence is 1, so it doesn't plan. It grabs whatever is closest.

Two real changes. The 2024 crab can't grapple a Large creature, so a horse or an ogre just takes the 4 damage. And the 2024 Grappled condition is harsher than the 2014 one: a grappled target has Disadvantage on attack rolls against anything except the crab, and the crab can drag it.
How Giant Crabs Fight
Grab, then pull. The claw hits on a 13 or better against AC 16, 40% of the time. Against a wizard with AC 12 it's 60%. On a hit the target is grappled and its speed drops to 0. The crab's turn after that is simple: attack again with the free claw (or the same target), then walk or swim away, hauling its catch.
Dragging costs it speed. Under the 2014 rules, a creature dragging a grappled target moves at half speed unless the target is two or more sizes smaller. Under the 2024 rules, each foot costs 1 extra foot unless the target is Tiny or two sizes smaller. Either way a crab hauling a Medium character covers 15 feet a turn. Two turns of that and a fighter standing at the waterline is in the water.
Why the water matters. Underwater, a creature without a swim speed has Disadvantage on melee weapon attacks. In 2014 the exceptions are the dagger, javelin, shortsword, spear and trident. In 2024 any weapon that deals Piercing damage is exempt. A fighter with a longsword or warhammer, held by a crab in chest-deep surf, swings at Disadvantage. A 2024 grapple adds nothing extra here, because the crab is the grappler and the target can attack it normally. The penalty is all from the water.
Escaping takes an action. The target spends its action on a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check against DC 11. With +5 it succeeds on a 6 or better, 75% of the time. With +0 it's an 11 or better, 50%. Every turn spent escaping is a turn not spent attacking, which is how a 25 XP crab costs a level 1 party real time.
Two claws, one attack. The crab has no Multiattack. It can hold two creatures but only makes one Claw attack per turn. In 2024 the grappling rules say a body part holding one creature can't target another until it lets go, so a crab with both claws full can't attack anyone new. That makes it a timer, not a damage engine: one claw for 4 damage a turn, and nothing at all once both claws are full.
How Many Giant Crabs for a Level 1 Party?
For four level 1 characters, the 2024 Low budget is 200 XP. Four giant crabs are 100 XP and eight are 200 XP: both are Low under the 2024 rules. The 2014 encounter math in our calculator disagrees sharply, because of the group multiplier:
Giant crabs vs four level 1 characters
2024 rules
2014 guidelines (with multiplier)
4 crabs (100 XP)
Low
Medium (200 adjusted XP)
6 crabs (150 XP)
Low
Hard (300 adjusted XP)
8 crabs (200 XP)
Low
Deadly (500 adjusted XP)
The 2014 multiplier treats eight crabs as eight separate threats. At the table the truth is in between: eight crabs grappling eight times is a mess, but they deal so little damage that a level 1 party rarely drops. Use four to six for a level 1 shoreline fight, and pair a couple of crabs with something that hits hard, like a sahuagin or a merrow, once the party is level 3 or higher. The crabs hold people in place; the other creature does the damage.
How Players Beat Giant Crabs
•Hit it hard, once. 13 hit points is two weapon hits or one good spell. AC 15 is the hurdle, so save-based spells skip it. The crab's Dexterity save is +2 in 2014 (+1 in 2024) and its Wisdom save is −1.
•Stay off the waterline. Fight from dry ground at least two moves from the water. A crab that grabs someone 30 feet inland can't drag them anywhere useful in one round.
•Free a grappled friend. The grapple ends if the crab is Incapacitated or if the target is pushed out of its reach. Thunderwave pushes a creature 10 feet on a failed Constitution save, and the crab's Constitution save is only +0.
•Bring piercing weapons to a sea fight. Spears, daggers and shortswords dodge the underwater penalty in both editions. In 2024 any piercing weapon does, rapier included.
•Talk to it, or not.Speak with Animals works, but with Intelligence 1 the crab has little to say beyond hunger. Animal Friendship is the better spell: in 2014 it only works on beasts with Intelligence 3 or lower, which the crab is.
Giant Crab Encounter Ideas
The tide pools. At low tide, the party crosses a rock shelf full of pools to reach a sea cave. Six giant crabs sit in the pools, hidden with Stealth +4. When the tide turns, the shelf floods 1 foot every round, and every grapple pulls a character toward the deeper channel.
The shipwreck salvage. A merchant hires the party to recover a strongbox from a wreck in 15 feet of water. Two giant crabs live in the hull. In the dark, their blindsight finds the divers first. A third crab is wedged around the strongbox itself, and the box comes up with it.
The crab market. A fishing village farms giant crabs in walled pens and sells their shells as shields. One night the pen gate is opened on purpose. Eight crabs scatter into the streets. Who opened it, and why only on the night the tax collector came to town?
Frequently Asked Questions
What CR is a giant crab in 5e?
CR 1/8, worth 25 XP, in both the 2014 and 2024 rules.
Can a giant crab grapple two creatures?
Yes. It has two claws and each claw can grapple one target. It still makes only one Claw attack per turn, because it has no Multiattack.
How do you escape a giant crab's grapple?
Use your action to make a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check against DC 11. The grapple also ends if the crab is Incapacitated or you are moved out of its reach.
What changed for the giant crab in 2024?
Its Dexterity dropped from 15 to 13 and Stealth from +4 to +3, and its claw can now grapple only a Medium or smaller creature. AC, hit points, damage and the escape DC are the same.
Can a druid Wild Shape into a giant crab?
In the 2014 rules, from level 4: it is CR 1/8, but its swim speed rules it out at level 2. In the 2024 rules swim speeds aren't restricted, so a level 2 druid can take the form.
