Giant Weasel 5e: Stats, Ambushes and Weasel Mounts

A giant weasel is a CR 1/8 Medium Beast with AC 13, 9 hit points, a 40-foot speed, darkvision and a +5 bite for 5 damage. Its numbers are better than its CR suggests: the bite hits as hard as a goblin's scimitar, and Stealth +5 lets it pick the moment the fight starts. The 2014 weasel hunts by sound and smell (Keen Hearing and Smell). The 2024 weasel loses that trait but gains a 30-foot climb speed, Acrobatics +5 and a higher Dexterity.

    Traits

Keen Hearing and Smell. The weasel has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

    Actions

Keen Hearing and Smell gives Advantage on Perception checks that use hearing or smell. A passive check with Advantage gets +5, so this weasel's passive Perception is 13 for sight but 18 for a footstep or a scent. A rogue sneaking past a weasel den needs a Stealth total of 19 to stay unnoticed by smell.

The bite, AC, hit points and CR are the same. The 2024 weasel is a harder target to pin: Acrobatics +5 helps it break out of a grapple, and the climb speed takes it up walls and into the rafters.

    How Giant Weasels Fight

Ambush first. A weasel that starts hidden chooses when the fight begins. In 2014 its Stealth +5 against a passive Perception of 12 needs a 13 total (an 8 on the die, 65%). In 2024 the Hide action is DC 15, which it makes on a 10 (55%), and success gives it the Invisible condition, so its first bite has Advantage.

Bite math. Against AC 16 the +5 bite hits on an 11 (50%) for 5 damage: 2.5 a round. Against a level 1 wizard in robes (AC 12), it hits 70% of the time. Weasels should go for the soft targets first.

Hit and slip away. A weasel has no Nimble Escape, so leaving melee provokes opportunity attacks. Use the 2024 climb speed instead: bite, then next turn go up a wall where the party's melee can't follow. In 2014, let it fall back into a burrow, where its darkvision gives it the edge.

Weasels give up. A hunting animal wants an easy meal, not a war. Have the pack scatter when two of them are down.

How Many Giant Weasels for a Level 1 Party?

    Weasels vs 4 level 1 characters2024 budget2014 guidelines
    4 (100 XP)LowMedium (200 adjusted)
    6 (150 XP)LowHard (300 adjusted)
    8 (200 XP)LowDeadly (500 adjusted)

The 2024 budget at level 1 is 50/75/100 XP per character. The 2014 column uses the Dungeon Master's Guide multiplier, which our encounter calculator applies. The budgets disagree a lot here because the 2014 multiplier punishes numbers. Four weasels that open from hiding hit harder than a "Low" fight. Start with four, and add more only if the party has a strong area spell.

    How Players Beat Giant Weasels

    • •Noise and scent discipline. In 2014 they hear and smell you from far off. Approaching a den downwind is a reasonable DM call that removes the smell half of Keen Hearing and Smell. That's a DM ruling, not rules text.
    • •Area spells. At 9 hit points, a failed save against Thunderwave (2d8, average 9) kills a giant weasel a little over half the time (2d8 rolls 9 or more on 56% of rolls).
    • •Charm, don't fight. Int 4 is too high for the 2014 Animal Friendship, which fails against a beast with Int 4 or higher. The 2024 version has no Intelligence limit and works.
    • •Protect the casters. Weasels go for the lowest AC.

    Weasel Mounts and Wild Shape

Mount for a Small character. A rider must be at least one size smaller than its mount, so a Medium giant weasel can carry a halfling or gnome, not a human. Its carrying capacity is 165 lb. (Str 11 × 15). Compared with the mastiff, the other classic Small-rider mount, the weasel has better AC (13 vs 12) and almost twice the hit points (9 vs 5), but the mastiff's bite knocks targets Prone. Whether a 2024 weasel can climb with a rider on its back isn't covered by the rules. DM ruling, not rules text: allow it on rough walls and trees.

Wild Shape. CR 1/8 with no fly or swim speed, so a druid can take this form from level 2 in both editions. It's a fast stealth scout with darkvision.

Not a familiar. The weasel (the Tiny one) is on both editions' Find Familiar list. The giant weasel isn't: it's not on the 2014 list, and it's CR 1/8, above the 2024 limit of CR 0.

    Giant Weasel Encounter Ideas

The chicken thieves. A farming village is losing livestock at night. The culprits are four giant weasels living in the drainage culvert under the road. Two farmers already tried to smoke them out and only made them angrier.

The halfling cavalry. A halfling border patrol rides giant weasels. They're friendly, but they mistake the party for poachers and open with an ambush from the long grass.

The wizard's escapees. A wizard's experiments with growth magic got out. The weasels are loose in his library. The 2024 weasels climb the shelves and drop on readers from above.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What CR is a giant weasel in 5e?

CR 1/8 (25 XP) in both editions, with AC 13 and 9 hit points.

Can a druid turn into a giant weasel?

Yes, from druid level 2 in both editions. It's CR 1/8 and has no fly or swim speed.

Can a giant weasel be a mount?

For a Small rider, yes. It's Medium, and a mount must be at least one size larger than its rider. It carries up to 165 pounds.

Can a giant weasel be a familiar?
