Noble NPC Stat Block 5e: Running Nobles in Social Scenes and Fights
This page covers the noble NPC stat block, the creature for a baron, a guild heiress, a scheming courtier or the magistrate the party needs a signature from. It is not the Noble character background. The noble is a CR 1/8 Medium Humanoid worth 25 XP, with AC 15 (breastplate), 9 hit points and a +3 rapier for 5 damage. Its real stats are social: Deception +5, Persuasion +5, Insight +4 and Charisma 16. It also has Parry, which adds 2 to its AC against one melee hit. The 2024 version is nearly identical; only the Parry wording, languages, size options and alignment changed.
Your players will remember this fight. Will you? Loreify turns your session audio into notes, NPC lists and quotes in 5-10 minutes.

SRD 5.1 notes that the same stat block works for courtiers who aren't of noble birth: chamberlains, ambassadors, wealthy merchants and anyone else who wins by talking.

Parry. The noble adds 2 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it. To do so, the noble must see the attacker and be wielding a melee weapon.

The numbers that matter:
•Wisdom 14, Charisma 16. Its two best scores are the social ones. Insight +4 makes it hard to lie to; Deception +5 and Persuasion +5 make it good at lying and convincing.
•AC 15 and Parry. Expensive armor and fencing lessons. Against one melee attack a round it's effectively AC 17.
•9 hit points. Two average hits from anyone, or one good one, and it's down.
•No save proficiencies. Its best saves are Charisma +3 and Wisdom +2.
Parry.Trigger: The noble is hit by a melee attack roll while holding a weapon. Response: The noble adds 2 to its AC against that attack, possibly causing it to miss.

The only mechanical difference is Parry. The 2014 noble needs to see the attacker, so a hidden assassin's strike can't be parried. The 2024 noble only needs a weapon in hand, so a noble who keeps a rapier drawn can parry an attack it never saw coming. For an assassination plot, that's worth deciding before the session.
Running a Noble in a Social Encounter
Most nobles never roll initiative. The noble's stat block is a set of numbers for an argument.
When a player lies to the noble (2014). The player's Charisma (Deception) check is contested by the noble's Wisdom (Insight) check. A bard with Deception +7 against Insight +4 wins about 62% of the time; a fighter with +0 wins about 30%. A tie means the noble isn't convinced either way, so the conversation continues.
When the noble lies to the party (2014). The noble's Deception +5 is contested by a character's Insight. A character with Insight +2 catches the lie only about 34% of the time. If you use passive checks, a noble's Deception of 15 (10 + 5) beats most characters' passive Insight.
The 2024 Influence action. In 2024 rules, the DM first decides whether the noble is willing, unwilling or hesitant. Only a hesitant noble requires a check. The DC is 15 or the noble's Intelligence score (12), whichever is higher, so DC 15. Attitude changes the roll:
Noble's attitude
Persuasion +5 succeeds
Persuasion +8 succeeds
Friendly (Advantage)
about 80%
about 91%
Indifferent
55%
70%
Hostile (Disadvantage)
about 30%
49%
A noble's attitude is the lever. A gift, a favor or a shared enemy that moves a noble from Indifferent to Friendly does more than a better Persuasion bonus.
Give it an agenda. A noble with no wants is a quest-giver. A noble who wants the party's help but can't be seen asking, or who wants something the party is carrying, is a scene. Decide three things: what it wants, what it fears, and what it will offer. Our NPC generator can rough in the personality, and the NPC name generator can name the house.
How the Noble Fights
Badly, and only when it must. A noble's best combat action is getting someone else to fight.
Damage. One rapier attack at +3. Against AC 16 it hits on 13 or higher (40%) for 5 damage: about 2 damage a round. It isn't a threat.
Parry, worked out. A +5 attacker hits AC 15 on a 10 or higher (55%). Parry turns 10 and 11 into misses, dropping that attack to 45%. With 9 hit points, Parry is the difference between surviving one swing and not.
The noble's turn. Use Disengage or Dash and get behind its guards. A noble who fights to the death should be a rare choice: a duelist with something to prove, or a cornered villain.
Building Encounters Around a Noble
At 25 XP, the noble barely touches the budget. What you're building is its entourage. Under the 2024 SRD budget for four characters:
The 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide guidelines (used by our encounter calculator) treat a noble and four guards as 250 XP after the ×2 multiplier for five creatures: Medium for four level 1 characters.
For a noble who can actually fight, use a different stat block and keep the noble's skills. A gladiator with Deception +5 is a dueling aristocrat; a mage with Persuasion is a court wizard with a title.
How Players Beat or Win Over a Noble
•Charm and read it. It's a Humanoid with Wisdom +2. Charm Person, Suggestion and Detect Thoughts all work. A charmed noble knows it was charmed when the spell ends, so plan for the aftermath.
•Don't lie to it with low Charisma. Insight +4 beats most characters' Deception. Let the party's face do the talking, or tell the truth.
•Use its interests. Debts, rivals, heirs and reputation are better pressure than steel.
•In a fight, ignore Parry with spells. Parry only works against melee attacks, so saving-throw spells and ranged attacks skip it entirely. A single Magic Missile (three darts, 3.5 damage each, about 10.5) takes it from 9 to 0 on average.
•Watch the consequences. Killing a noble rarely ends the trouble. Its house, its creditors and its guards' families all remember.
Noble Encounter Ideas
The marriage contract. A baron offers the party a generous fee to recover a stolen marriage contract before a wedding in three days. The thief is the baron's daughter, who wants out of the marriage. The baron knows this and lies about it (Deception +5); a successful Insight check reveals he's hiding something about the thief's identity.
The masquerade. The party attends a masked ball to find which of six courtiers is selling secrets to a rival city. Each courtier uses the noble stat block and lies smoothly. The traitor's tell isn't a failed Deception roll but a detail: she's the only guest who knows the layout of the servants' halls.
The hostage who isn't. Bandits hold a young noble for ransom. When the party rescues him, he refuses to leave without the bandits' leader, whom he hired to stage the kidnapping so his family would pay off his gambling debts. Now he wants the party to keep quiet, and he's willing to pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
What CR is the noble in 5e?
The noble is CR 1/8 and worth 25 XP in both 2014 and 2024. It has AC 15 (breastplate), 9 hit points and a +3 rapier.
Does the noble have Parry?
Yes. As a reaction it adds 2 to its AC against one melee attack. In 2014 it must see the attacker and wield a melee weapon; in 2024 it only needs to be holding a weapon when it's hit.
What skills does the noble NPC have?
Deception +5, Insight +4 and Persuasion +5, in both editions. It has no saving throw proficiencies.
Can I use the noble stat block for a merchant or ambassador?
Yes. SRD 5.1 says the noble's statistics can represent courtiers who aren't of noble birth. A wealthy merchant, diplomat or guildmaster fits the same numbers.
Is the noble stat block the same as the Noble background?
No. The noble is an NPC stat block for the DM. The Noble background is a character option for players and isn't part of this stat block.
