Silver Dragon 5e: Every Age, Paralyzing Breath and Hold Monster
A silver dragon is a lawful good metallic dragon that breathes cold and has a second breath that paralyzes. It runs CR 2 (wyrmling), CR 9 (young), CR 16 (adult) and CR 23 (ancient). The adult has AC 19, 243 hit points (216 in 2024), immunity to cold and a 60-foot cone breath at DC 20. Its signature move is shutting characters down, not burning them. The 2024 rules make that much stronger: Paralyzing Breath no longer needs a recharge, and the adult can cast Hold Monster at will, including as a legendary action.
Bite.Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) piercing damage.
Breath Weapons (Recharge 5–6).The dragon uses one of the following breath weapons. Cold Breath. The dragon exhales an icy blast in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Paralyzing Breath. The dragon exhales paralyzing gas in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Cold Breath (Recharge 5–6).Constitution Saving Throw: DC 13, each creature in a 15-foot Cone. Failure: 18 (4d8) Cold damage. Success: Half damage.
Paralyzing Breath.Constitution Saving Throw: DC 13, each creature in a 15-foot Cone. First Failure: The target has the Incapacitated condition until the end of its next turn, when it repeats the save. Second Failure: The target has the Paralyzed condition, and it repeats the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. After 1 minute, it succeeds automatically.

With 45 hit points and AC 17, the silver wyrmling is the toughest CR 2 dragon in the SRD (the green wyrmling has 38, the white 32). Strength 19 gives it a +6 attack.
The two editions use it very differently. The 2014 wyrmling has one Breath Weapons action on a 5–6 recharge and picks cold or paralysis. The 2024 wyrmling's Paralyzing Breath has no recharge, so it can exhale paralysis every single turn, with Cold Breath as a separate recharge option. Its melee also doubles: two Rends at +6 for 9 each instead of one bite.

The young silver hits AC 18 on an 8 or better (65%). Its 2014 bite and two claws total 43 damage if all land; the 2024 version's three Rends total 45, and it can swap one Rend for Paralyzing Breath each turn. That swap is the whole 2024 young silver: two Rends and a paralysis cone every round, plus cold breath when the recharge comes up.
It has no Legendary Resistance. A 9th-level party can still end the fight with one failed save on the dragon's side.

The ancient silver is Gargantuan with AC 22 and 487 hit points (468 in 2024). Its 2014 version adds Change Shape, a beast or humanoid form of its CR or lower. The 2024 version deals far more in melee: three Rends at +17 for 28 each (84 total), versus 55 for the 2014 bite and claws. It also casts Control Weather, Teleport and a level 7 Ice Storm once per day each, and its Spellcasting DC rises to 23.

The new paralysis is a trade. It's slower, because a character gets a second save before it locks up. It's also relentless, because the dragon can use it every turn instead of once per recharge.
How Silver Dragons Fight
A silver dragon's plan is simple: paralyze, then punish. Everything else in its stat block supports that.
The paralysis math (2024 adult). Paralyzing Breath is DC 20 Constitution. A wizard with Constitution +3 and no proficiency fails on a 16 or lower, 80% of the time. Two failures in a row are needed, so the wizard ends up paralyzed 64% of the time from one breath. A fighter proficient in Constitution (+8) fails 55% of the time per save, about 30% overall.
Why paralysis is so deadly. A Paralyzed creature automatically fails Strength and Dexterity saves, and any hit from within 5 feet is a critical hit. The adult's Rend has 10-foot reach, so it uses Pounce (move half its Speed, one Rend) to get adjacent. A critical Rend averages 35 damage (4d8 + 8 slashing plus 2d8 cold), and three critical Rends in one round total over 100.
Stack the follow-ups. Cold Gale is a Dexterity save, which paralyzed characters fail automatically: 14 damage and a 30-foot shove away from their friends. Ice Knife's 5-foot cold burst is also a Dexterity save. Its Multiattack can swap one Rend for either Paralyzing Breath or Ice Knife (not both), so a typical 2024 adult turn is paralysis cone plus two Rends, then Cold Gale down the line after someone else's turn.
Hold Monster as a second net. Chill casts Hold Monster (DC 19 Wisdom, Paralyzed on a failure) on one creature after someone else's turn. Hold Monster needs Concentration, so the dragon can hold only one target this way at a time. Its at-will Shapechange is cast without Concentration, so it can keep a disguise up and still concentrate on Hold Monster.
2014 differences. The 2014 adult must choose each recharge: 58 cold damage or a paralysis cone. Open with paralysis when the party is clustered and frontline-heavy, and with cold when the casters are bunched. Frightful Presence (DC 18) goes first every Multiattack against anyone who hasn't saved yet.
It fights with a conscience. A lawful good dragon has reasons to hold back. It might paralyze intruders and question them instead of killing them; the 2024 adult and ancient can cast Zone of Truth once a day for exactly that. Running it as a judge rather than a murderer makes the encounter more interesting and the paralysis less of a death sentence.

Paralysis swings fights harder than XP shows. Against a party with few Constitution saves, treat a silver as one step harder than its budget. Our encounter calculator also runs the 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide math, where a single dragon gets the ×1 multiplier.
The silver rarely needs minions. If you add any, give it allies that benefit from paralysis: a pair of knights (700 XP each) who swing into paralyzed characters for automatic critical hits turn a young silver into a High fight at level 7 (6,400 total vs a 6,800 budget).
How Players Beat Silver Dragons
•Constitution saves are everything. Fighters, barbarians and sorcerers are proficient in Constitution. Put them in front, keep the casters spread out, and never let three characters stand in one 60-foot cone.
•Answer paralysis fast.Lesser Restoration ends the Paralyzed condition in both editions, and in 2024 it only costs a Bonus Action. In 2024, the incapacitated first stage is a warning: that character's next save decides it, so act before it.
•Stay out of 5 feet. Paralysis only makes hits critical from within 5 feet. Ranged characters who are paralyzed still take Advantage attacks, but not automatic crits. Pounce exists to close that gap, so make the dragon spend legendary actions to reach you.
•Counter the spells. Hold Monster is a level 5 spell. Counterspell can stop it, though in 2024 the dragon gets a Constitution save (+7) to resist the counter.
•Don't bother with cold. Cold immunity is its only damage immunity. Fire, lightning and radiant all work normally.
•Target Intelligence or Dexterity (2024). Its weakest saves are Intelligence +3 and Dexterity +5. Its Constitution save fell from +12 in 2014 to +7, which helps too.
•Talk. It's lawful good. A party with a true story and nothing to hide can often end a silver dragon fight with words.
Change Shape, Shapechange and the Silver in Disguise
In the 2014 SRD only the ancient silver can change form. Its Change Shape action turns it into a beast or humanoid with a CR no higher than its own, and it keeps its hit points, mind, Legendary Resistance and Change Shape action.
In 2024 both the adult and the ancient can cast Shapechange at will, limited to Beast or Humanoid forms, with no temporary hit points and no Concentration. Under the 2024 Shapechange spell it keeps its creature type, alignment, mental scores and hit points, and the spell lets a caster keep a Spellcasting feature. The dragon's Spellcasting is an action rather than a feature; letting it keep that in human form is the obvious reading, but it's a DM ruling. Two consequences at the table:
•A disguised 2024 silver is still a Dragon for any effect that checks creature type, even while it looks like a human scholar.
•It keeps its full hit point total in any form, and (under the ruling above) can cast Hold Monster while still in human form before dropping the disguise.
The SRD has no rules for how long a silver dragon lives in disguise or why. That part of the story is yours.
Silver Dragon Encounter Ideas
The magistrate (2024 rules). A respected city judge is an adult silver in human form. The party stands accused of a crime they didn't commit. The judge casts Zone of Truth during the hearing, and the real culprit is in the room too. Clear yourselves and you have a powerful patron; lie and you meet the dragon.
The paralyzed caravan. Travelers are found frozen stiff on a mountain road, alive and untouched except for missing cargo. A young silver is paralyzing smugglers who carry stolen relics and taking the relics back to a ruined temple. The party arrives carrying one.
The storm that won't break (2024 rules). A blizzard has sat over a mountain valley for a month, cutting off three villages. An ancient silver is using Control Weather to keep an invading army trapped in the passes. The villagers are starving too. The party must find another way to stop the army before the dragon will let the snow end.
Frequently Asked Questions
What CR is a silver dragon in 5e?
The silver dragon wyrmling is CR 2, the young silver dragon CR 9, the adult CR 16 and the ancient CR 23. The CRs and XP are the same in the 2014 and 2024 rules; in 2024 the adult and ancient are worth more XP when fought in their lairs.
What are the silver dragon's breath weapons?
Cold Breath (a cone of cold damage) and Paralyzing Breath (a cone of gas that paralyzes). Both use a Constitution save. In 2014 they share one recharge. In 2024 only Cold Breath recharges, and Paralyzing Breath can be used every turn.
How does silver dragon Paralyzing Breath work in 2024?
On a first failed save the target is Incapacitated until the end of its next turn, then saves again. On a second failure it's Paralyzed and repeats the save at the end of each of its turns, succeeding automatically after 1 minute.
Is a silver dragon immune to cold?
Yes. All silver dragons are immune to cold damage. They have no other damage immunities or resistances.
Can a silver dragon take human form?
In 2014 only the ancient silver can, through Change Shape. In 2024 the adult and ancient cast Shapechange at will into Beast or Humanoid forms without needing Concentration.
What is the difference between a silver dragon and a white dragon?
Both breathe cold, but a white dragon is a CR 13 (adult) chaotic evil predator with no spells, while a silver is a CR 16 (adult) lawful good dragon whose second breath paralyzes and whose 2024 form casts Hold Monster. For a fire-breathing metallic, see the gold dragon.
