Running a Winter Wolf fight this week? Loreify records your session and writes the recap, including every monster, NPC and loot drop your party ran into.

Winter Wolf 5e: Cold Breath, Pack Bites and Talking Wolves

A winter wolf is a CR 3 Large Monstrosity with AC 13, 75 hit points, a 50-foot speed and immunity to cold. It bites for 11 and knocks targets Prone, and its Cold Breath (Recharge 5–6) hits everyone in a 15-foot cone for 18 (4d8) cold damage. It is neutral evil and speaks Common and Giant, which makes it a scout, a negotiator and a hunter. The 2024 rules swap the breath to a Constitution save, make the knockdown automatic, and drop Snow Camouflage.

Cold Breath (Recharge 5–6). The wolf exhales a blast of freezing wind in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

The SRD 5.1 text describes it as the size of a dire wolf, with snow-white fur, and says frost giants keep winter wolves as guards and hunting companions. It also says they speak Common and Giant only well enough to follow simple conversations. That matters at the table: a winter wolf can overhear the party's plan and report it.

Snow Camouflage per edition. In 2014, a winter wolf hiding in snow rolls Stealth +3 with Advantage. To beat a passive Perception of 13 it needs a 14 or more, so it needs an 11 on the die: 50% on one roll, 75% with Advantage. Outside snow it is back to 50%. The 2024 wolf hides anywhere with a flat +5 against the Hide action's DC 15, which succeeds on a 10 or higher (55%). The 2014 wolf is a better ambusher on a glacier; the 2024 wolf is slightly better everywhere else.

The bite got meaner. Against a 2014 wolf, a character with a +3 Strength save stays standing half the time (an 11 or higher reaches DC 14). Against a 2024 wolf, every bite that hits a Medium character puts it on the ground.

    How Winter Wolves Fight

Open with the breath. Cold Breath is a 15-foot cone. A party that walks in a tight line through a snowfield is a perfect target. Against a Dexterity save of +2 (2014), each creature fails on 1-9 (45%) and takes about 13 damage on average. Three characters in the cone take about 39 between them. In 2024 the save is Constitution: a wizard with Con +1 averages 13.5, while a fighter proficient in Con saves (say +5) saves on a 7 and averages about 12.

Recharge math. After the first breath, the wolf rolls a d6 at the start of each turn and gets the breath back on a 5 or 6 (1 in 3). If it breathes every time it can:

    RoundChance the breath is back
    233%
333% (56% it has come back at least once by now)
433% (70% at least once by now)

Across a four-round fight, the expected number of breaths is 2: one guaranteed, plus three 1-in-3 rolls. Plan for two, and treat a third as bad luck for the party.

Bite when the breath is down. +6 against AC 16 hits on a 10 (55%) for 11. With a second wolf or a frost giant next to the target, Pack Tactics gives Advantage: about 80% to hit, about 9 damage per attack on average. A Prone target gives the next attacker Advantage too, so two winter wolves feed each other.

Use the speed and the voice. At 50 feet, a winter wolf can breathe, take the hit, and be out of sight next turn. It's intelligent (Int 7) and speaks Common, so play it like a hunter that taunts. It can call a surrender offer across the ice, or lie about how many wolves are out there. Have it retreat below about 25 hit points; it has no reason to die for a giant.

    Running a Winter Wolf Encounter

    Level 42 (1,400 XP)ModerateDeadly (2,100 adjusted)
    Level 52 (1,400 XP)LowMedium
    Level 73 (2,100 XP)LowMedium

The 2024 numbers come from the SRD 5.2.1 XP budget per character. The 2014 column uses the 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide thresholds and group multiplier, which our encounter calculator applies. The two disagree sharply at level 4 because two breaths can land on the same round. If both wolves start with their breath ready and each cone catches two characters, that's about 52 damage before the party acts. Stagger them, or start one wolf out of range.

Winter wolves pair with frost giants, as guards and hunting partners. For a lower-level pack, mix one winter wolf with ordinary wolves: the wolves provide Pack Tactics, and the winter wolf provides the breath.

    How Players Beat Winter Wolves

    • β€’Spread out. The cone is 15 feet long and 15 feet wide at its end. Keep more than 15 feet between characters and one breath catches one of them: 13 damage instead of 39.
    • β€’Don't bring cold. It's immune to cold damage, so Cone of Cold and cold cantrips do nothing. Fire, lightning and weapon damage all work.
    • β€’Target Intelligence or Charisma. Its weakest saves are Int (βˆ’2) and Cha (βˆ’1). It has no saving throw proficiencies.
    • β€’It understands Common. Under 2014 rules Command fails against a creature that doesn't understand your language, which stops it on an ordinary wolf. A winter wolf understands, so "Flee" and "Grovel" work. The 2024 Command has no language requirement.
    • β€’Talk. An intelligent evil wolf can be bribed, scared or turned against its giant.

    Winter Wolf Encounter Ideas

The interpreter. A frost giant jarl sends a winter wolf to deliver terms to a mountain village, because the wolf speaks Common. The wolf adds its own demands on top and pockets the tribute. The village thinks the giant is being unreasonable.

Breath on the ice. Two winter wolves hunt a party crossing a frozen lake. One breathes from the shore while the other waits in the snow to the side. The real danger is the wolves pulling everyone down Prone onto the ice, far from cover.

The deserter. A wounded winter wolf asks the party for meat and shelter in a blizzard. It fled its giant after failing a hunt. It will trade the location of the giant's lair, and it's planning to sell the party back to the giant in the morning.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What CR is a winter wolf in 5e?

A winter wolf is CR 3 (700 XP) in both the 2014 and 2024 rules, with AC 13 and 75 hit points.

How often can a winter wolf use Cold Breath?

Cold Breath has Recharge 5–6. After it's used, the wolf rolls a d6 at the start of each of its turns and regains the breath on a 5 or 6. On average it breathes about twice in a four-round fight.

What save does a winter wolf's breath use?

DC 12 Dexterity in the 2014 rules and DC 12 Constitution in the 2024 rules. Either way it deals 18 (4d8) cold damage on a failure and half on a success.

Does the winter wolf have Snow Camouflage in 2024?

No. The 2014 winter wolf has Advantage on Stealth checks to hide in snowy terrain. The 2024 stat block drops that trait and raises its Stealth from +3 to +5 instead.

What's the difference between a winter wolf and a dire wolf?

A dire wolf (CR 1) is an animal with a big bite and Pack Tactics. A winter wolf (CR 3) is an intelligent, neutral evil Monstrosity with 75 hit points (the 2014 dire wolf has 37), cold immunity, a cold breath weapon and the ability to speak Common and Giant.
