Owlbear 5e: Stats, Damage Math and How to Survive One

The owlbear is a CR 3 Large Monstrosity with AC 13, 59 hit points, a 40-foot speed and two attacks a turn at +7 that deal 24 damage on average (2014) or 28 (2024) when both land. It has no spells, no saves worth mentioning and no tricks. It's dangerous because it's faster than the party, hits like a much bigger monster, and is outside the targets of most low-level spells players reach for against an animal, which only work on Beasts or Humanoids. The 2024 version swaps the beak for a second claw-style Rend, gains a 40-foot climb speed and loses its Keen Sight and Smell trait in exchange for Perception +5.

    Traits

Keen Sight and Smell. The owlbear has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight or smell.

    Actions

Multiattack. The owlbear makes two attacks: one with its beak and one with its claws.
Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 10 (1d10 + 5) piercing damage.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage.

Compare it with other CR 3 creatures and two numbers stand out. +7 to hit comes from Strength 20 plus proficiency, so the owlbear hits a character in chain mail and a shield (AC 18) half the time. AC 13 is low for its CR, so the party lands most of its attacks too. Owlbear fights are short and bloody on both sides.

Its senses are good. Darkvision 60 feet, Perception +3 and Keen Sight and Smell (Advantage on Perception checks that use sight or smell) make a 2014 owlbear hard to sneak past in its own woods.

The Owlbear in the 2024 Rules

SRD 5.2.1 keeps the owlbear's core numbers (AC 13, 59 HP, CR 3, 700 XP) and changes how it attacks and moves.

Three things change at the table:

    • •It hits about 17% harder. Two 14-damage Rends average 28 against the 2014 total of 24.
    • •Trees are no longer safe. A 2014 owlbear has no climb speed, so climbing costs it 1 extra foot per foot, and a character 20 feet up a tree buys a round. The 2024 owlbear climbs at its full 40 feet.
    • •Sneaking past is slightly easier. The 2014 passive Perception of 13 doesn't include Keen Sight and Smell. Under the 2014 rules, Advantage adds 5 to a passive score, so against sight or smell the 2014 owlbear's effective passive Perception is 18. The 2024 owlbear's flat 15 is lower, and it no longer rolls with Advantage when it actively searches.

    How the Owlbear Fights

An owlbear doesn't have tactics so much as a direction: toward whatever it can reach. Run it as a hungry, territorial predator and the stat block does the rest.

It always gets there. At 40 feet of speed, it closes on characters who move 30. A party that turns and runs loses 10 feet a round, and it can Dash too. Ranged characters get one, maybe two rounds of shots before the owlbear is on them.

Damage per round against common ACs (both versions hit at +7; averages include critical hits):

Target ACHit chance2014 expected damage per round2024 expected damage per round
    13 (leather, Dex +2)75% (hits on 6+)about 19about 22
    16 (chain mail)60% (hits on 9+)about 15about 18
    18 (chain mail + shield)50% (hits on 11+)about 13about 15

Both attacks hit about a third of the time against AC 16, for 24 or 28 damage. A level 3 wizard has about 20 hit points. One good owlbear turn takes a caster from full to the floor.

Pick targets like an animal. Owlbears have Intelligence 3. They don't focus the healer on purpose. Have it attack whatever is closest, whatever hurt it last, or whatever is smallest and bleeding. That keeps it honest and still scary.

Make it retreat when it's beaten. A wild owlbear fights for food and territory, not to the death. At about 20 hit points or fewer, have it break off and crash into the undergrowth. A wounded owlbear that comes back the next night is a better story than one that dies on schedule.

Use the ground. Owlbears are Large (10 by 10 feet). In a dense forest or a narrow cave they can't always reach the back line without squeezing. In open ground they go wherever they want. Put the encounter where the fight's shape matters: a clearing with a single big tree, a ruined chapel with one doorway, a riverbank.

    Running an Owlbear Encounter

One owlbear is worth 700 XP. Using the 2024 budget (SRD 5.2.1) for four characters:

Party levelXP budget (Low / Moderate / High)Owlbear encounter
    2400 / 600 / 8001 owlbear is High. Expect someone to drop.
    3600 / 900 / 1,6001 owlbear (700) is Moderate. A classic level 3 boss.
    41,000 / 1,500 / 2,0002 owlbears (1,400) is Moderate (1,400 of the 1,500 budget).
    52,000 / 3,000 / 4,4004 owlbears (2,800) is Moderate, 6 (4,200) is High.

Under the 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide guidelines (the math in our encounter calculator), one owlbear is Hard for four level 2 characters (thresholds 600 Hard, 800 Deadly) and Medium for level 3. A mated pair is 1,400 XP × 1.5 = 2,100 adjusted XP, which is Deadly for level 4 (2,000) and Medium for level 5.

Single-monster fights can swing hard on initiative. If the owlbear goes first and lands both attacks on a level 2 character, that character is out of the fight before they act. For new or small parties, start the owlbear 60 feet away or give the party a warning sign (a torn-open deer carcass, feathers on bark, hooting at dusk) so the first round isn't a coin flip.

    How Players Beat an Owlbear

The owlbear has no damage resistances, no condition immunities and no saving throw proficiencies. The hard part is that a lot of the obvious answers don't apply to a Monstrosity with Intelligence 3.

    What doesn't work:

    • •Beast-only spells. Animal Friendship, Speak with Animals and Dominate Beast target Beasts. The owlbear is a Monstrosity.
    • •Humanoid-only spells. Hold Person and Charm Person can't target it.
    • •2014 Command and Hideous Laughter. The 2014 Command has no effect on a creature that doesn't understand your language, and the owlbear has no language. The 2014 Hideous Laughter doesn't affect a creature with Intelligence 4 or less.
    • •Strength contests. With Strength +5, it shakes off a DC 13 Entangle 65% of the time, and grappling it is a losing contest for most characters.

    What works:

    • •Wisdom saves. Wisdom +1 is its best target that isn't Intelligence or Charisma. Under 2024 rules both Command ("Grovel" knocks it prone and ends its turn) and Hideous Laughter work, since the 2024 versions dropped the language and Intelligence limits. Against a DC 13 spell, the owlbear fails 55% of the time.
    • •Prone and focus fire. A prone owlbear gives every melee attacker within 5 feet Advantage. Against AC 13, a +5 attacker with Advantage hits about 88% of the time.
    • •Height and walls. Against a 2014 owlbear, getting up a tree or onto a roof costs it double movement to follow. Against a 2024 owlbear, use a gap it can't climb past: a cliff edge, a rope bridge, or a doorway it has to squeeze through.
    • •Feeding it. It's a hungry animal. A fresh carcass or a dropped pack of rations is a fair way to buy a round or end the fight, at the DM's discretion.
    • •Healing that matches burst damage. The owlbear's damage arrives in big chunks. Healing Word to pick up a downed character from range is better than Cure Wounds on someone who's still standing.

    Owlbear Encounter Ideas

The orchard. A farming family's apple orchard has been stripped of fallen fruit, and their dog is gone. The owlbear has a den in the ruins of the old cider press at the edge of the orchard. The family wants it gone; a traveling naturalist will pay double to have it taken alive. Capturing a 59 HP Large Monstrosity with Strength 20 is a puzzle in itself.

The bell tower. A 2024 owlbear has climbed into the bell tower of an abandoned chapel to nest. The party has to ring the bell as a signal for an ally, and the only way up is the stairs (the owlbear's) or the outside wall (also the owlbear's, since it climbs 40 feet). Fighting a Large creature on narrow stairs puts most of the party behind the front-liner.

The trapper's mistake. A trapper caught an owlbear in a pit, lost his nerve, and fled to town. Now there's a wounded, furious owlbear (start it at 40 hit points) in a pit beside the main road, and the pit walls are crumbling. The party arrives as it climbs out, with a merchant caravan 100 feet behind them.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What CR is an owlbear in 5e?

The owlbear is CR 3 and worth 700 XP in both the 2014 and 2024 rules. It has AC 13 and 59 hit points.

How much damage does an owlbear do?

The 2014 owlbear makes a beak attack (10 piercing) and a claws attack (14 slashing), 24 damage if both hit. The 2024 owlbear makes two Rend attacks for 14 slashing each, 28 if both hit. Both versions attack at +7.

Can an owlbear climb in 5e?

The 2024 owlbear has a climb speed of 40 feet, so it climbs as fast as it runs. The 2014 owlbear has no climb speed, so climbing costs it double movement.

Does Animal Friendship work on an owlbear?

No. Animal Friendship, Speak with Animals and Dominate Beast only work on Beasts, and the owlbear is a Monstrosity in both editions.

What's the difference between an owlbear and a brown bear?

A brown bear is a CR 1 Beast with AC 11 and 34 hit points (22 in 2024). An owlbear is a CR 3 Monstrosity with AC 13, 59 hit points and more damage per turn (24 or 28 if both attacks hit, against the bear's 19 in 2014 or 12 in 2024). Beast-only spells work on the bear but not the owlbear.

What level should players be to fight an owlbear?

Level 3 is the sweet spot for a single owlbear with four characters. At level 2 it's a High-difficulty fight that can knock out a character in one turn. At level 5 and up, use two or more.
