Pearl of Power 5e: Spell Slot Recovery, Warlocks and 2024 Changes
A Pearl of Power 5e is an uncommon wondrous item that gives a spellcaster back one expended spell slot, once per day. The slot it returns is 3rd level at most. It requires attunement by a spellcaster, it only has to be on your person, and using it costs an action (a Magic action in the 2024 rules). The verdict: one extra Fireball or Counterspell a day for a single uncommon item, which makes it a strong pick for a caster's attunement slot from about level 5 to 10 and a weaker one as the character's slot count grows.
Ten sessions from now, will anyone remember who's carrying the Pearl of Power? Loreify turns your session audio into notes, NPC lists and quotes in 5-10 minutes.
Pearl of Power Rules Text
The 2014 card (SRD 5.1) comes first, then the 2024 card (SRD 5.2.1).
Pearl of Power
2014 rules
Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement by a spellcaster)
UncommonRequires attunement by a spellcaster
While this pearl is on your person, you can use an action to speak its command word and regain one expended spell slot. If the expended slot was of 4th level or higher, the new slot is 3rd level. Once you use the pearl, it can't be used again until the next dawn.
Wondrous Item, Uncommon (Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster)
UncommonRequires attunement by a Spellcaster
While this pearl is on your person, you can take a Magic action to regain one expended spell slot of level 3 or lower. Once you use the pearl, it can't be used again until the next dawn.
The 2024 text is two sentences shorter. It drops the command word, swaps the action for a Magic action, and rewrites the slot rule. That last change looks cosmetic but isn't, as the warlock section below shows.
How the Pearl of Power Works
Who can attune to it
Only a spellcaster. Both SRDs define that the same way: a creature qualifies if it can cast at least one spell using its own traits or features, not through a magic item. A fighter who casts from a Ring of Spell Storing doesn't count. A tiefling fighter does, because the tiefling's lineage trait grants a cantrip in both SRDs.
Timing matters for half-casters. In the 2014 rules paladins and rangers gain Spellcasting at 2nd level, so a 1st-level paladin can't attune. In the 2024 rules both classes have Spellcasting at level 1.
Attunement takes a short rest spent focused on the pearl, and it uses one of your three attunement slots like any other item.
Using it: action, command word, and silence
In 2014 you use an action to speak the pearl's command word. Two general rules follow from that. A command word item can't be activated where sound is prevented, such as inside a Silence spell. And an item that takes an action to activate isn't a Use an Object action, so a thief's Fast Hands can't trigger it.
In 2024 it's a Magic action with no command word, so Silence doesn't stop it. Either way it costs your main action for the turn, which is why you use it between fights or on a turn where nothing better is available. It never needs to be held: "on your person" means in a pocket, a pouch or on a string around your neck.
Which slot you get back
2014: you regain one expended spell slot of any level, but if that slot was 4th level or higher, it comes back as a 3rd-level slot. So you can burn a 5th-level slot on Cone of Cold and recover a 3rd-level slot afterwards.
2024: you regain one expended slot of level 3 or lower. If the only slots you've spent are level 4 or higher, the pearl does nothing.
For most casters the two read the same in play, because by the time you use the pearl you've spent some low slots. The difference shows up for warlocks.
Warlocks and Pact Magic
Warlock Pact Magic slots are all the same level: 1st at levels 1-2, 2nd at 3-4, 3rd at 5-6, 4th at 7-8, and 5th from level 9 on. They come back on a short rest.
•2024: a single-class warlock with level 4 or 5 Pact Magic slots never has an expended slot of level 3 or lower, so the pearl can't restore anything. It works for a warlock only through level 6.
•2014: the text says an expended slot of 4th level or higher comes back as a 3rd-level slot, so a 9th-level warlock regains a 3rd-level slot, not a 5th-level one. The SRD settles how it works: Pact Magic casts a warlock spell by expending "a spell slot" (and the multiclassing rules let Pact Magic and Spellcasting slots cast each other's spells), so the 3rd-level slot casts any warlock spell of 3rd level or lower. The next short or long rest restores all your Pact Magic slots at their normal level anyway.
Since warlocks already recover slots on a short rest, the pearl is worth less to them than to anyone else even when it works.
Sorcerers, wizards and other recovery features
The pearl stacks with class features that recover slots, because each one has its own limit.
•Wizard Arcane Recovery (after a short rest, slots totalling up to half your wizard level, none 6th level or higher; once per day in 2014, once per Long Rest in 2024) and the pearl both work on the same day. A 6th-level wizard can recover 3 levels of slots with Arcane Recovery and a 3rd-level slot with the pearl.
•Sorcerers can convert a spell slot into Sorcery Points equal to its level, so the pearl is also 3 Sorcery Points a day.
"The next dawn" and recharge
The pearl works once, then not again until the next dawn. It doesn't need a long rest, so a pearl used at midnight is ready again at sunrise. The 2024 SRD covers planes where dawn never comes: the GM decides when such an item recharges.
Edge case: a slot above your maximum
The 2014 wording ("the new slot is 3rd level") lets a caster who has spent only high slots gain a 3rd-level slot while all their 3rd-level slots are still full. The text doesn't say whether that pushes you over your normal number of 3rd-level slots. DM ruling: allow it; the slot is one extra spell either way, and it's gone when used.

What this means at the table:
•Higher-level warlocks lose the item in 2024. From warlock level 7 the 2024 pearl has nothing to restore.
•Silence no longer blocks it. Small, but a 2014 caster trapped in a Silence zone can't use the pearl and a 2024 one can.
•Everyone else plays the same. A wizard or cleric who has spent a mix of slots gets a 3rd-level slot back under both versions.
Is the Pearl of Power Worth It?
For a full caster between roughly levels 5 and 10, yes. One 3rd-level slot is one more Fireball (8d6, average 28 damage per target), Counterspell, Revivify or Spirit Guardians a day.
The value shrinks as you level, because the pearl returns one slot while your total keeps growing:

Early on the pearl is a real share of your day. At high level it's one 3rd-level spell next to a list of 6th- to 9th-level options it can never restore.
What it competes with for an attunement slot:
•Ring of Spell Storing (rare): up to 5 levels of stored spells that anyone can refill. Better for a party, worse for a solo caster because you spend your own slots to fill it.
•Wand of the War Mage: a bonus to spell attack rolls, every turn. Better for a caster who relies on attack cantrips; worse for one who casts save spells.
•Cloak of Protection: +1 to AC and saving throws. Many casters want this first, since one failed Constitution save can cost a concentration spell worth more than a slot.
When it's a trap: on a warlock above level 6 under 2024 rules (it does nothing), on any character whose turns in combat are too valuable to spend an action on recovery, and on a 2014 paladin or ranger who wants it at 1st level.
Pearl of Power for DMs
Where it turns up. Uncommon and only useful to a caster, so it fits a first or second hoard in a party with a wizard, cleric, druid, bard or sorcerer. The magic item generator can roll treasure if you need a hoard around it.
What it changes. One extra mid-level spell per day for one character. Over a long adventuring day that's small. In a campaign with one fight per day it's large, because the caster starts each fight with an extra 3rd-level slot.
Pricing. The 2024 SRD values uncommon items at 400 GP. Compare that with the 2024 cost of scribing a 3rd-level Spell Scroll: 150 GP and 5 days of work for one spell, once. The pearl gives that every day. The 2014 SRD has no prices; any 2014 figure you've seen is from the Dungeon Master's Guide. The magic item rarity calculator helps if you're pricing a shop.
At the table. Ask the player to note when they use it and when dawn passes. The pearl is easy to forget, and just as easy to use twice by accident.
Hooks.
•A pearl diver's guild sells oyster pearls by the basket. One in the latest basket hums faintly when a spellcaster holds it, and three people have already bid on it.
•A dying archmage's apprentice asks the party to recover the pearl her master wore on a chain. It's now around the neck of the creature that killed him.
•The party's cleric finds a pearl in a temple's offering bowl. Taking it is theft; asking for it starts a debt to the priests.
A Pearl of Power is the kind of item a player swears they "always had". Loreify records each session and logs the loot, so you can check when it was actually found.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Pearl of Power require attunement?
Yes. It requires attunement by a spellcaster in both the 2014 and 2024 rules: a creature that can cast at least one spell with its own traits or features, not with a magic item.
What level spell slot does a Pearl of Power restore?
At most 3rd level. In 2014 you can pick any expended slot, but a 4th-level or higher slot comes back as 3rd level. In 2024 you regain an expended slot of level 3 or lower.
Does a Pearl of Power work for warlocks?
In 2024 only through warlock level 6, while Pact Magic slots are level 3 or lower. In 2014 a higher-level warlock regains a 3rd-level slot instead of a Pact Magic slot of their usual level.
How often can you use a Pearl of Power?
Once, then not again until the next dawn. It doesn't depend on a long rest.
How much is a Pearl of Power worth?
400 GP under the 2024 SRD, the value of any uncommon magic item. The 2014 SRD gives no prices for magic items.
