Boots of Speed 5e: Doubled Speed, the 10-Minute Limit and 2024 Changes
Boots of Speed in 5e are rare wondrous boots that require attunement. Click the heels together as a Bonus Action and your speed doubles, while any creature that makes an Opportunity Attack against you rolls with Disadvantage. The magic runs for 10 minutes in total (100 rounds), then stops until you finish a Long Rest. The 2024 version doubles your Speed rather than only your walking speed, and its limit applies only to you. Verdict: a strong pick for skirmishers and casters who need to stay out of reach.
Ten sessions from now, will anyone remember who's carrying the Boots of Speed? Loreify turns your session audio into notes, NPC lists and quotes in 5-10 minutes.

While you wear these boots, you can use a bonus action and click the boots' heels together. If you do, the boots double your walking speed, and any creature that makes an opportunity attack against you has disadvantage on the attack roll. If you click your heels together again, you end the effect.
When the boots' property has been used for a total of 10 minutes, the magic ceases to function until you finish a long rest.

Same rarity, attunement and 10-minute budget. Two wordings changed: "walking speed" became "Speed", and the 2024 limit stops the magic "for you".
How the Boots of Speed Work
Turning them on and off
Both clicks cost a Bonus Action, one to start and one to stop. Since a Bonus Action happens on your own turn, you can't switch the boots on in response to something an enemy does. The effect has no set duration: it runs until you click again or the 10-minute budget runs out.
If you know a fight is coming (you're kicking in the door), click the heels beforehand and the boots are already running on your first turn. Every round outside combat counts against the 10 minutes.
Doubled speed, and what it does to Dash
A character with a 30-foot speed moves 60 feet a turn with the boots on. The Dash action adds movement equal to your speed after modifiers in both editions, so a Dash with the boots running takes that character 120 feet in one turn.
Doubling zero is still zero. A grappled creature has a speed of 0 in both editions (and in 2014 it can't benefit from any bonus to its speed), so the boots won't pull you out of a grapple. Escape first, then run.
Disadvantage on Opportunity Attacks
Any creature that makes an Opportunity Attack against you while the boots are active has Disadvantage on the roll. The math: a monster at +6 against AC 16 hits on a 10 or higher, a 55 percent chance. With Disadvantage it has to roll 10 or higher twice, which is about 30 percent. Walking past three such enemies goes from an expected 1.65 hits to about 0.9.
Disengage is stronger for a single turn, since it stops Opportunity Attacks entirely. The boots win over a whole fight: one Bonus Action covers every later turn and leaves your action free.
The 10-minute budget
The limit is a total, not a single run. You can use the boots for 30 seconds in one fight, switch them off, and use them again later the same day. A round is 6 seconds, so 10 minutes is 100 rounds. Four five-round fights spend 20 rounds and leave 80. The budget runs dry only if someone forgets to switch them off or uses them to travel.
Combining with Haste and other speed boosts
The Haste spell also doubles your speed, in both editions. Neither SRD has a rule for two effects that each double the same number; the "Combining Spell Effects" rule only covers the same spell cast twice, and the boots aren't a spell.
DM ruling: apply flat bonuses such as Longstrider's +10 feet first, then each doubling in turn. A 30-foot character with Longstrider, Haste and the boots moves 160 feet, and 320 with a Dash. If that's too much, rule that doublings don't stack (80 feet). Decide before the chase starts.
A Potion of Speed grants the Haste effect, so it falls under the same ruling. Expeditious Retreat doesn't double anything; it lets you Dash as a Bonus Action, which is a clean combination with the boots once they're already on.
Other speeds (flying, swimming, climbing)
The 2014 boots name "walking speed", so a flying or swimming speed is unchanged. The 2024 boots double your Speed, and the 2024 rules glossary says that when an effect raises or lowers your Speed for a time, any special speed you have (Fly, Swim, Climb, Burrow) rises or falls by an equal amount. So in 2024 a character flying under the Fly spell gets faster too.
Wearing them
You can wear only one pair of footwear at a time, in both editions. Boots of Speed, Winged Boots and Boots of Striding and Springing all compete for the same feet, and you can't attune to two pairs of Boots of Speed either.

What this means at the table:
•Fliers and swimmers gain in 2024. The 2014 boots do nothing for a flying speed; the 2024 glossary carries the increase to every special speed.
•"For you" opens a hand-off. Once you've spent your 10 minutes, another party member can attune (a Short Rest) and get their own 10. In 2014 the boots' magic stops outright until the long rest.
Are Boots of Speed Worth It?
For the right character, yes: anyone who moves through or around enemies every turn. A melee rogue darting in and out, a monk, a paladin reaching the back line, or a wizard staying 60 feet from the nearest claw all get a full fight's mobility for one Bonus Action.
They're weaker for characters whose Bonus Action already does something every turn. A 2014 rogue's Cunning Action, a two-weapon fighter's extra attack, a cleric's Spiritual Weapon and a monk's Flurry of Blows all compete with that first click.
How they compare with the other SRD speed options:
Option
Rarity / level
Effect
Cost to you
Boots of Speed
Rare, attunement
Speed ×2, Disadvantage on Opportunity Attacks
Bonus Action, 10 minutes a day
Winged Boots (2014)
Uncommon, attunement
Flying speed equal to walking speed
Up to 4 hours of flight, recharges slowly
Winged Boots (2024)
Uncommon, attunement
Fly Speed 30 feet for 1 hour
Magic action and 1 of 4 charges
Boots of Striding and Springing
Uncommon, attunement
Speed at least 30 feet, better jumps (triple distance in 2014; a 30-foot jump for 10 feet of movement in 2024)
Always on
Haste spell
3rd level
Speed ×2, +2 AC, extra limited action
Concentration, lethargy when it ends
Longstrider spell
1st level
+10 feet speed for 1 hour
An action, a 1st-level slot
Winged Boots are the better pick if the party has no flier, since flight solves problems doubled ground speed can't. A Cloak of Protection is the safer pick for a character who mostly stands still: +1 to AC and saving throws helps every round, while the boots only help when you move.
They're a trap on a heavy-armored stand-and-fight character, or in a campaign of tight corridors with nowhere to run.
Boots of Speed for DMs
Where they turn up. A rare item fits a mid-level hoard, around when the party starts facing monsters with multiple attacks and reach. A fast humanoid enemy who wears them in the fight is the obvious source.
What they change. Chases, retreats and positioning. The wearer reaches anything within 120 feet with a Dash and walks away from melee without Disengaging, so a wall of bodies no longer protects your spellcaster. Answer with ranged attackers, reach monsters and difficult terrain, which still costs double.
Track the budget. Ask the player to note when the boots go on and off; leaving them running through a dungeon crawl burns the 100 rounds.
Pricing. The 2024 SRD values a rare item at 4,000 GP and treats rare items as hard to buy. The 2014 SRD has no prices; any 2014 figure comes from the Dungeon Master's Guide. For a shop, the magic item rarity calculator gives the SRD numbers, and the magic item generator can roll up alternatives at the same rarity.
Hooks.
•A courier guild owns a single pair and rents them to its fastest runner. That runner has gone missing along with the boots and a sealed message.
•In a 2024 game: a noble's champion and her rival share one pair, swapping attunement after each has spent their ten minutes. The party finds out mid-duel.
Who wore the boots, and how many minutes are left today, is the kind of detail that's easy to lose between sessions. Loreify records the game and writes up the loot with the recap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Boots of Speed require attunement?
Yes. Boots of Speed are a rare wondrous item that requires attunement in both the 2014 and 2024 rules, so they take one of your three attunement slots.
How long do Boots of Speed last?
Up to 10 minutes in total, spread over as many uses as you like. Once you've used them for 10 minutes, the magic stops until you finish a Long Rest. In 2024 the limit is personal: the magic stops "for you", so someone else who attunes to them can still use them.
Do Boots of Speed stack with Haste?
The SRD doesn't say how two doublings combine, so it's the DM's call. Multiplying them turns a 30-foot speed into 120 feet; ruling that doublings don't stack keeps it at 60. Settle it before the first chase.
Do Boots of Speed double flying speed?
In the 2014 rules, no: they double walking speed only. In the 2024 rules they double your Speed, and the rules glossary says special speeds such as Fly Speed change along with it.
How much are Boots of Speed worth?
4,000 GP under the 2024 SRD, the standard value for a rare magic item. The 2014 SRD gives no prices for magic items.
