How do you name a paladin?

Start from the paladin’s race and homeland, then choose a dignified, resolute name that fits a sworn champion. Many paladins also carry a title tied to their oath or the ideal they serve, which pairs well with a strong personal name.

What are good paladin names?

Noble, weighty names work best — the kind that sound right announced in a hall or before a charge — often joined by an earned epithet like "the Oathkeeper." The goal is a name that reads as a living symbol of the paladin’s vow.

Should a paladin have a title?

A title isn’t required, but it fits the class beautifully. Because paladins embody an oath, an epithet tied to their cause, deity, or a famous deed reinforces their role and gives allies and foes alike a name to rally around or fear.

Should a paladin’s name match their race?

Yes — ground the name in the paladin’s race and culture first, then lean toward its noble, dignified end. Add an oath-title if you like, and you’ll have a name that fits both the character’s heritage and the paladin archetype.

Sacred Names and Holy Titles

Paladin naming traditions are deeply intertwined with religious ceremony and divine calling. Many paladins receive their true names during the sacred ritual of their oath-taking, often through divine vision or pronouncement by high clergy. These names frequently incorporate elements of their deity's portfolio or their sworn oath's nature. Devotion paladins might bear names reflecting purity and faith, while Vengeance paladins could have names suggesting righteous fury. In knightly orders, paladins often add honorifics earned through service: 'the Just,' 'the Merciful,' or 'the Unbending.' Some cultures believe a paladin's name carries divine power, making them especially effective against evil. Noble families with paladin traditions often pass down consecrated names through generations, each bearer adding to the name's holy legacy. The fall of a paladin can corrupt their name, transforming 'Lightbringer' to 'Lightbane' as a mark of their broken oath.

How to name a paladin

Paladin names lean noble and resolute. A paladin can be any race, so build from their homeland, then favor something dignified that suits a sworn champion — a name that would sound right announced before a battle or a court.

Many paladins are also known by a title tied to their oath or the deity, cause, or ideal they serve — "the Oathkeeper," "Shield of the Dawn." Pairing a strong personal name with an earned epithet captures the paladin’s role as a living symbol of their vow.
