How do you name a fighter?

Since fighters can be any race, start from their people and background — knight, soldier, gladiator, or sellsword. Choose a name that fits that origin, then consider a martial epithet or unit nickname earned on the battlefield to give it a battle-tested edge.

What are good fighter names?

Grounded, sturdy names that fit the character’s culture, often paired with a hard-won epithet like "the Unbroken" or "Ironside." Fighters span many backgrounds, so the best name simply matches their origin and hints at a life of combat.

Do fighters have a naming tradition?

No — fighter is a class, not a culture, so names come from the character’s race and homeland. What ties fighter names together is tone: practical, grounded, and frequently accompanied by a nickname earned through service or a famous deed.

Should a fighter’s name match their race?

Yes. Build from the fighter’s race and background first, then add a martial by-name if it suits them. That keeps the name rooted in the world while capturing the disciplined, battle-hardened identity of the class.

Fighter Names Across Cultures

Fighter naming traditions are as varied as fighting styles themselves. In military organizations, fighters often go by rank and surname until earning distinction. Mercenary companies develop their own naming customs - some use numbers, others nicknames based on fighting style or personality. Gladiatorial arenas demand theatrical names that excite crowds: 'The Crimson Blade' or 'Iron Mountain.' Noble-born fighters might carry ancestral names heavy with martial history, while common-born warriors often earn names through deeds. Different fighting traditions influence naming: eastern-inspired monks-turned-fighters might have philosophical names, while brutal pit fighters use intimidating monikers. Veterans often collect names from different conflicts, wearing them like battle scars. The most legendary fighters transcend personal names, becoming known by signature weapons or fighting techniques. In adventuring parties, fighters often receive affectionate nicknames from companions, contrasting with their fearsome battle titles.

How to name a fighter

Fighters can be any race, so their names come from their people and background. Since a fighter might be a knight, a soldier, a gladiator, or a sellsword, pick a name that fits where they came from and the life that put a weapon in their hands.

Many fighters also carry a martial epithet or unit nickname earned on the battlefield — "the Unbroken," "Ironside." A solid personal name plus a hard-won by-name captures the grounded, battle-tested feel of the class.
