Quick Answer
Shield of Faith is a 1st-level abjuration spell for Clerics and Paladins. As a bonus action, you give one creature within 60 feet a +2 bonus to AC for up to 10 minutes, with concentration. It doesn't scale with higher slots. The 2024 version is the same except for its material component, a prayer scroll.
Overview
Shield of Faith is a flat +2 to AC that lasts a whole fight, or several fights within 10 minutes. On a d20, +2 AC removes two faces from the attacker's hit range. Against an attacker who needs 12 or higher, that is a 45% chance to hit dropping to 35%, about one hit in five prevented.
Two things make it efficient. It costs a bonus action, so you still have your action. And it lasts 10 minutes, so a cast before the door opens covers the whole encounter.
The cost is concentration. Shield of Faith competes with Bless, Spirit Guardians, Hold Person, and every other concentration spell a Cleric or Paladin wants. It wins when the party's front line is taking most of the hits and nothing else needs your concentration.
Stat Block
| Property | Value |
|---|
| Level | 1 |
| School | Abjuration |
| Casting Time | 1 bonus action |
| Range | 60 feet |
| Components | V, S, M |
| Material | A small parchment with a bit of holy text written on it. |
| Duration | Up to 10 minutes |
| Concentration | Yes |
| Ritual | No |
| Save/Attack | None |
| Classes | Cleric, Paladin |
Clerics have it from 1st level and Paladins from 2nd level in the 2014 rules. In 2024, Paladins get spells at level 1, and the Oath of Devotion always has it prepared from level 3.
When NOT to Use This
- •You need your concentration for something bigger. Bless on three allies or Spirit Guardians on a crowd usually does more.
- •The enemies attack with saving throws instead of attack rolls. AC doesn't help against a dragon's breath or a Fireball.
- •The target is rarely attacked. +2 AC on the wizard in the back does nothing if nobody reaches her.
- •The attacker hits on a 2 or needs a 20 anyway. At the extremes, +2 changes little.
Spell Slot Efficiency
| Metric | Assessment |
|---|
| Slot Efficiency | Good. A 1st-level slot for up to 10 minutes of +2 AC. |
| Action Economy | Bonus action, so you keep your action. |
| Opportunity Cost | Concentration, which most Cleric and Paladin spells also want. |
When worth the slot: A long fight against several attackers who target one front-liner.
When NOT worth the slot: Short fights, saving-throw-heavy enemies, or when your concentration is already on a better spell.
Upcasting
Shield of Faith has no higher-level effect. Always cast it with a 1st-level slot.
Pro Tips
Tip #1: Cast it before the fight.
Why it works: The spell lasts up to 10 minutes. Cast it outside the room and your bonus action is free on the first turn.
This avoids the mistake of: Spending round one on a buff you could have had ready.
Tip #2: Put it on whoever the enemies will attack.
Why it works: +2 AC is worth more on a creature taking many attacks. A fighter facing three bandits benefits three times per round; the rogue hiding at range benefits zero times.
This avoids the mistake of: Buffing yourself by reflex when the tank is taking the hits.
Tip #3: Stack it with other AC sources.
Why it works: Different spells add together. Shield of Faith plus the Shield spell is +7 AC. Half cover adds another +2 (see the cover rules).
This avoids the mistake of: Thinking AC bonuses never stack. Only the same spell twice doesn't stack.
Tip #4: Protect your concentration.
Why it works: If you cast it on yourself as a front-liner, every hit forces a Constitution save (DC 10 or half the damage, whichever is higher). The extra AC means fewer hits, which means fewer saves.
This avoids the mistake of: Forgetting the concentration check after a hit and keeping a spell you already lost.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Casting it on the same target twice
Why it's bad: Two castings of the same spell don't stack. Two clerics casting Shield of Faith on one fighter give +2, not +4.
Do this instead: The second cleric casts Bless or something else.
Casting a leveled spell on the same turn (2014)
Why it's bad: In 2014, if you cast a spell as a bonus action, the only other spell you can cast that turn is a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action. In 2024, you can expend only one spell slot per turn.
Do this instead: Pair Shield of Faith with a cantrip, an attack, or the Dodge action on the same turn.
Running it alongside another concentration spell
Why it's bad: You can concentrate on one spell at a time. Casting Bless ends Shield of Faith. In 2014, Divine Favor and Branding Smite also need concentration.
Do this instead: Decide before the fight which concentration spell the party needs.
Usage Tips
- •Ogre. An ogre's greatclub (+6, 13 damage) hits AC 18 on 12 or higher, 45% of the time. With Shield of Faith (AC 20), it needs 14: 35%. That is 22% fewer hits.
- •Hill giant. A hill giant makes two +8 attacks for 18 each. Against AC 18 each hits 55% of the time, about 19.8 damage per turn ignoring critical hits. At AC 20, 45%, about 16.2. Over a five-round fight that is about 18 damage saved, more than a 1st-level Cure Wounds heals.
- •Bandit captain, 2014. A bandit captain makes three +5 attacks (6, 6, and 5 damage). Against AC 16 each hits 50% of the time, 8.5 expected damage per turn. At AC 18, 40%, 6.8.
- •Enemy casters. In the 2014 SRD, the cult fanatic, mummy lord, and guardian naga prepare Shield of Faith. A cult fanatic's AC goes from 13 to 15. A fighter with +7 to hit drops from 75% to 65%. Breaking its concentration with damage removes the bonus.
- •Compare AC builds with the AC calculator.
Rules Notes
- •Range 60 feet, one creature of your choice. It can be you.
- •+2 bonus to AC for the duration.
- •Concentration, up to 10 minutes.
- •Bonus action casting time.
- •No higher-level effect.
- •The same spell from two casters doesn't stack; different spells do.
Synergies
- •Shield: A reaction +5 on top of Shield of Faith's +2, if someone in the party can cast it on themselves.
- •Spiritual Weapon (2014): No concentration in 2014, so a Cleric can run both.
- •Heavy armor and a shield: A Cleric or Paladin at AC 20 becomes AC 22, hard for most low-level monsters to hit.
- •Sanctuary: Another bonus-action protection with no concentration, for a different ally.
Anti-Patterns
- •Dropping Bless to cast Shield of Faith on one ally when Bless covers three.
- •Casting it on a creature that the enemy can't reach.
- •Casting it against enemies that mostly force saving throws.
Tactical Modules
- •Doorway tank: Cast it on the fighter holding a chokepoint. Every attack against them is at −2 effective.
- •Pre-buff: Cast it before opening the door, then use your first bonus action on something else.
- •Swap targets: If the enemy focus changes, let it drop and recast on the new target. It costs another 1st-level slot.
Countermeasures
- •Threat: The caster gets hit and loses concentration. Response: Cast it on someone else, or stay out of reach. Fallback: Recast with another 1st-level slot.
- •Threat: Enemies use saving throws. Response: Switch to a spell that helps saves, like Bless. Fallback: Spread out against areas.
- •Threat: An enemy cleric has it on themselves. Response: Damage it to force concentration saves. Fallback: Use save-based spells, which ignore AC.
Shield of Faith in the 2024 Rules
The 2024 spell is the same in play: 1st-level abjuration, Bonus Action, 60 feet, +2 AC, Concentration up to 10 minutes, Cleric and Paladin. The material component changed from a parchment with holy text to a prayer scroll.
The changes around it matter more. The 2024 Oath of Devotion always has Shield of Faith prepared from level 3, and the 2024 Cleric's prepared spell list recommends it at level 1. In 2024, Spiritual Weapon needs concentration, so a Cleric can no longer run it alongside Shield of Faith. The 2024 rule that you can expend only one spell slot per turn replaces the 2014 bonus-action spell rule.
