Pteranodon 5e: Stats, Flyby Dives and Running the Flock

The pteranodon is a CR 1/4 Medium flying dinosaur from the 2024 rules (SRD 5.2.1), with AC 13, 13 hit points, a 60-foot fly speed and a +4 bite for 6 damage. Its one trait, Flyby, means it never provokes an Opportunity Attack when it flies out of an enemy's reach, so it can dive, bite and climb back out of range on the same turn. There is no 2014 SRD pteranodon; the 2024 block works at a 2014 table as written.

    Traits

Flyby. The pteranodon doesn’t provoke an Opportunity Attack when it flies out of an enemy’s reach.

    Actions

Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +4, reach 5 ft. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) Piercing damage.

Read the speed line first. Fly 60 feet, walk 10 feet. In the air it is one of the fastest things a level 1 party will meet. On the ground it crawls, and a pteranodon that lands is in real trouble. The other numbers are modest: Dexterity 15, Perception +1 and no darkvision. It is a daytime hunter that sees no farther in the dark than a human does.

    How Pteranodons Fight

The dive. A pteranodon starts its turn about 30 feet from its target, flies in, bites and spends the rest of its 60 feet climbing back out of reach. Flyby removes the Opportunity Attack that would normally punish leaving melee. The only way a sword-and-board fighter gets to swing at it is by readying an attack for the moment it arrives.

The bite math. +4 against AC 15 hits on an 11 or better, 50% of the time, for 6 piercing (1d8 + 2). That is about 3 damage per pteranodon per round. Against AC 18 it drops to 35%, about 2.1. One pteranodon is a nuisance. Five of them diving on the same wizard (AC 12, hit 65% of the time) average about 19.5 damage a round, which drops most level 1 or 2 casters.

Pick soft targets. The pteranodon has Intelligence 2, but hunting animals still read the herd. Run it as going for whoever is alone, small or carrying food. A Small character is a meal. A fighter in plate is a rock.

Use the height. Over a cliff, a rope bridge or open water, no melee character reaches a pteranodon that hangs back 60 feet; only bows and spells do. It doesn't need to stay close for long: it only needs to arrive, bite and leave. Put the encounter somewhere the party can't simply walk away from, like a narrow ledge path or a boat.

Retreat early. With 13 hit points, one solid hit or a cantrip leaves it Bloodied. A wild animal that gets hurt flies off. Have wounded pteranodons break away at 60 feet a turn, and let the flock lose interest once two or three are down.

How Many Pteranodons for a Low-Level Party?

Each pteranodon is worth 50 XP. For four characters using the 2024 budget:

    PartyPteranodonsXP2024 difficulty2014 DMG guideline
    Four level 14200LowDeadly
    Four level 16300ModerateDeadly
    Four level 26300LowHard
    Four level 28400LowDeadly

The two systems disagree sharply here. The 2024 budget has no group multiplier, so eight pteranodons still count as a Low fight for level 2 characters. The 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide guidelines (used by our encounter calculator) multiply the XP of a large group by 2 to 2.5 and call the same flock Deadly. At the table, the answer depends on the terrain. Fighting on open ground with bows, a flock is manageable. Fighting on a cliff path with melee characters, six pteranodons can take down one character a round. For a level 3 party, pteranodons work best mixed in with something on the ground, such as an allosaurus the flock follows to scavenge its kills, or a triceratops herd the party is trying to cross.

    How Players Beat Pteranodons

    • •Ready an attack. Melee characters can't chase a 60-foot flier, but they can Ready an attack for when a pteranodon comes within reach. Flyby doesn't stop a readied attack, only Opportunity Attacks.
    • •Shoot. Bows, crossbows and attack cantrips do the work. A shortbow's 1d6 + 3 takes a pteranodon to half health, and two hits kill it.
    • •Knock it out of the sky. Under the 2024 rules, a flier falls if it gets the Prone or Incapacitated condition or its Fly Speed drops to 0. The pteranodon can't hover, so anything that does that while it's 40 feet up deals 4d6 falling damage, which is more than its hit points on an average roll.
    • •Area damage when they cluster. Pteranodons diving at one target end up next to each other. Shatter (3d8 Thunder, Constitution save against a +0 modifier) kills one on a failed save about 59% of the time. Thunderwave (2d8) and Burning Hands (3d6) rarely kill outright, but a pteranodon that fails the save usually ends up Bloodied, and a hurt pteranodon is one that flies home.
    • •Fight at night. It has no darkvision. In darkness it can't see a party that doesn't carry light, and a flock that can't see its prey goes elsewhere. Firelight works the other way: it lights up whoever is holding the torch.
    • •Talk to it. As a Beast, it is a valid target for Speak with Animals and Animal Friendship. A charmed pteranodon stops attacking (the 2024 spell ends if the party damages it), and Speak with Animals lets you ask what it has seen from the air.

    Wild Shape, Polymorph and Riding

Wild Shape. In the 2024 rules, forms with a Fly Speed unlock at druid level 8. By then the pteranodon is a weak choice for a fight but a fine one for travel: you keep your own hit points, gain 8 temporary ones and fly at 60 feet with Flyby, so you can cross a battlefield without taking Opportunity Attacks.

Polymorph. The new form's CR can't be higher than the target's level or CR, so almost any creature can become a pteranodon. Turning an ally into one is a quick airlift: a 60-foot fly speed, plus 13 temporary hit points in the 2024 version of the spell.

As a mount. The mounted combat rules (2014 and 2024) need a willing creature at least one size larger than the rider with an appropriate anatomy. A Medium pteranodon can carry a Small rider, never a Medium one. DM ruling, not rules text: its body counts as appropriate anatomy, so a gnome or halfling on a trained pteranodon makes a good sky-patrol NPC.

    Pteranodon Encounter Ideas

The egg cliffs. An alchemist pays well for pteranodon eggs, which sit in nests on a sea cliff 80 feet above the surf. The climb takes several checks, and six pteranodons dive at anyone on the rock face. A climber who gets bitten has to hold on. The party can fight, distract the flock with fish, or wait for the low tide when the adults go out to hunt.

The harbor thieves. A fishing town has lost half its catch to a flock that raids the drying racks every morning. The fishers want the birds gone. A druid in town wants them moved, not killed, and knows a sea stack where they could nest instead. Getting a flock to relocate is a better adventure than killing it.

Following the big one. Four pteranodons circle over a tyrannosaurus rex, waiting for scraps. When the party hears their calls, the T. rex is near. Clever players can use the circling flock to track the predator, or to avoid it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What CR is a pteranodon in 5e?

The pteranodon is CR 1/4 and worth 50 XP. It appears in the 2024 rules (SRD 5.2.1) as a Medium Beast (Dinosaur) with AC 13 and 13 hit points.

Is there a 2014 pteranodon stat block?

Not in the SRD. The 2014 SRD 5.1 has no pteranodon, so the 2024 stat block is the only SRD version. It works at a 2014 table without changes.

    How does Flyby work?

Flyby means the pteranodon doesn't provoke an Opportunity Attack when it flies out of an enemy's reach. It can move in, bite and fly away on the same turn without giving melee characters a free swing. Readied attacks still work against it.

Can a druid Wild Shape into a pteranodon?

Yes, from druid level 8 in the 2024 rules, because that is when forms with a Fly Speed become available. The druid keeps its own hit points and gains temporary hit points equal to its druid level.

    Can you ride a pteranodon?

Only a Small rider fits. The mounted combat rules in both editions need a mount at least one size larger than its rider, and the pteranodon is Medium. Whether a pteranodon's body counts as an appropriate anatomy for riding is the DM's call.
