Giant Fire Beetle 5e: The Monster That Lights the Dungeon

A giant fire beetle is a CR 0 Small Beast with AC 13, 4 hit points, a weak bite and one trait that matters: Illumination. It sheds Bright Light in a 10-foot radius and Dim Light for another 10 feet, all the time. It isn't a threat to anyone past level 1. It is a light source, a warning sign and a dungeon set piece. The 2014 SRD adds that its glands keep glowing for 1d6 days after it dies. The 2024 version bites for 1 fire damage, resists fire, climbs, and qualifies as a Find Familiar form.

The SRD 5.1 text calls it a nocturnal creature named for a pair of glowing glands, found mostly underground and in dark forests. It says miners and adventurers prize the beetles because the glands keep shedding light for 1d6 days after the beetle dies.

Glands after deathGlow for 1d6 days (SRD 5.1 text)Not mentioned

AC, hit points, blindsight, Illumination and CR are unchanged. The climb speed matters more than it looks: a 2024 beetle on the ceiling lights a small room from above, out of reach of a sword.

Illumination: Using a Fire Beetle as a Light Source

A torch, in both SRDs, gives Bright Light in a 20-foot radius and Dim Light for 20 more, and burns for 1 hour. The beetle's light has half the radius (10 bright, 10 dim), so a quarter of the bright area. What it offers instead is duration and hands.

    • •A living beetle never goes out. It needs no fuel and doesn't need a hand to hold it. It also can't be turned off. You can only cover it, move it or kill it.
    • •Dead glands, 2014. The 1d6 days of light come from the SRD 5.1 description. The text doesn't give a radius for the harvested glands. DM ruling, not rules text: use the living beetle's 10/10 radius, and let the light end on a d6 roll of days, rolled secretly.
    • •Dead glands, 2024. SRD 5.2.1 doesn't mention it. If you want the item in a 2024 game, it's your call.
    • •Taming one. With Int 1, Animal Friendship works in both editions. A charmed beetle on a leash is a lantern that follows you for the spell's 24 hours.
    • •As a familiar (2024). The 2024 Find Familiar lets you pick "another Beast that has a Challenge Rating of 0", so a giant fire beetle qualifies. You get a glowing scout that climbs walls and that you can talk to telepathically within 100 feet. Short of covering it, dismissing it to its pocket dimension (a Magic action) is how you switch the light off. The 2014 spell has a fixed list that doesn't include it; allowing it there is a DM ruling.

Compare with spells: Continual Flame and Dancing Lights give light without a creature attached. The beetle's edge is that it costs nothing and needs no caster.

Darkness. The Darkness spell says nonmagical light can't illuminate its area. Nothing in Illumination calls it magical. DM ruling, not rules text: treat the beetle's glow as nonmagical, so a Darkness spell blacks it out. The beetle itself doesn't care: it has 30-foot blindsight.

    How Giant Fire Beetles Fight

Badly. The +1 bite against AC 16 hits on a 15 (30%), for 2 damage in 2014 and 1 fire damage in 2024. Six beetles average under 4 damage a round.

Their real effect is on everyone else. A fire beetle can't hide in the dark because it lights itself up, and it lights up anyone within 20 feet of it. In a cave fight, a cluster of beetles lights up the party for any attacker standing in the dark past the glow, including attackers without darkvision. Beetles crawling toward the party's hiding place are a moving spotlight.

    4 beetles (40 XP)LowTrivial
    6 beetles (60 XP)LowEasy
    6 beetles + 1 giant centipede (110 XP)LowMedium (275 adjusted)

The 2014 labels come from the Dungeon Master's Guide multiplier in our encounter calculator. Notice how one extra creature pushes the 2014 label up: seven creatures use the ×2.5 multiplier. Use beetles as scenery that bites, not as the fight.

How Players Beat Giant Fire Beetles

With 4 hit points, almost any hit kills one. A single Thunderwave (2d8, half on a success) clears most of a cluster. The harder question is what to do with the bodies.

    Giant Fire Beetle Encounter Ideas

The lamp farm. A mining camp keeps fire beetles in a pen and harvests their glands for the deep tunnels. The pen has broken open, the beetles have scattered into the mine, and every lit tunnel now has a creature in it.

The lantern trail. Kobolds have tied fire beetles along a tunnel at intervals. The beetles mark a path the party will follow. It leads straight into an ambush where the beetles light the party, and the kobolds wait outside the glow.

The dying light. The party buys harvested glands for an expedition. The merchant swears they're fresh. Roll the 1d6 days in secret.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much light does a giant fire beetle give off?

Bright Light in a 10-foot radius and Dim Light for an additional 10 feet, in both the 2014 and 2024 rules. A torch gives twice the radius (20 feet bright, 20 dim).

How long does a giant fire beetle's light last after it dies?

The 2014 SRD says its glands continue to shed light for 1d6 days after the beetle dies. The 2024 SRD stat block doesn't mention this.

Can a giant fire beetle be a familiar?

In the 2024 rules, yes: Find Familiar allows any Beast of Challenge Rating 0, and the giant fire beetle is CR 0. The 2014 Find Familiar has a fixed list of forms that doesn't include it.

What CR is a giant fire beetle?

CR 0 (10 XP) in both editions, with AC 13 and 4 hit points.
