    Quick Answer

Minor Illusion is an illusion cantrip for bards, sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards. As an action, you create either a sound or an image of an object within 30 feet. It lasts 1 minute with no concentration. An image must fit in a 5-foot cube and cannot make sound, light, or smell. Anything that touches it passes through. A creature that examines it can see through it with an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC.

    Overview

Minor Illusion is an illusion cantrip that makes one fake sound or one fake object. Bards, sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards can take it from 1st level, and it costs nothing to cast.

It is one of the most flexible cantrips in the game. A sound can lure guards away, fake a voice, or cover a retreat. An image can be a crate, a closed door, a pile of rubble, or false footprints. Because it has no verbal component, you can cast it without speaking.

The limits are strict. You get a sound or an image, never both. The image must be an object, not a creature. It cannot give off light. And physical contact gives it away at once, because things pass through it.

    When NOT to Use This

    • •You need a creature. The image can only be an object, so an illusory guard or monster is not allowed.
    • •You need light. The image cannot create light, so a fake torch will not light a room.
    • •The enemy will touch or walk into it. Physical interaction reveals it immediately.
    • •You want sound and image together. Minor Illusion makes one or the other. Silent Image, a 1st-level spell, makes larger moving images but still no sound.

    Spell Slot Efficiency

    MetricAssessment
Slot EfficiencyFree. It is a cantrip.
Action EconomyCosts your action. In combat, that is an action not spent on damage.
Opportunity CostOne cantrip known. For most illusion-friendly casters, it is worth the pick.

When worth the slot: Scouting, stealth, distraction, and social tricks. It costs only a cantrip choice.

When NOT worth the slot: Groups that rarely sneak, scout, or deceive.

    Pro Tips

Tip #1: Use sound to move enemies.

Why it works: The sound can be any noise from a whisper to a scream, including a voice. A cry for help or a crash down the hall can draw guards away from where you need to go.

This avoids the mistake of: Using the image when a noise would do the job better and is harder to disprove.

Tip #2: Make images that people will not touch.

Why it works: Interaction is the main way illusions fail. A wall section, a high shelf, a pile of filth, or a closed door are things people rarely touch.

This avoids the mistake of: Placing a fake chest that the first goblin tries to open.

Tip #3: Hide behind a 5-foot object, with your DM's agreement.

Why it works: An image of a crate or boulder can block sight for creatures that believe it. Whether you can then take the Hide action is a DM call.

This avoids the mistake of: Assuming it is automatic cover. The image does not stop attacks or spells.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    Making an illusory creature.

Why it's bad: The spell creates an image of an object. A person or monster is not an object.

Do this instead: Use the sound of a creature, such as footsteps or a growl. For visual creatures, use Silent Image or Major Image.

    Thinking it grants real cover.

Why it's bad: Arrows, spells, and creatures pass through the image. It does not give a bonus to AC or saves.

Do this instead: Treat it as a way to block sight, not a shield.

    Forgetting the Investigation check.

Why it's bad: A creature that uses its action to examine the illusion can make an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. On a success, the illusion becomes faint to it.

Do this instead: Expect suspicious enemies to check, and plan for what happens if they see through it.

    Usage Tips

    • •Worked example: a 1st-level wizard with 16 Intelligence has a spell save DC of 13. She makes the sound of a door slamming down a side corridor.
    • •An SRD guard (Intelligence 10, no Investigation proficiency) has to use its action to examine the sound. It succeeds on a 13 or higher, 40% of the time.
    • •An SRD ogre (Intelligence 5, −3 modifier) needs a 16 or higher, so it sees through the trick only 25% of the time.
    • •Many creatures never check at all. A creature only gets the check if it uses its action to examine the illusion.
    • •A sound can be one continuous noise or discrete sounds at different times during the minute. One cast can mimic footsteps, then a shout, then silence.

    Rules Notes

    • •You make a sound or an image of an object within 30 feet. It lasts 1 minute and needs no concentration.
    • •It ends early if you cast the spell again. In 2014 rules, you can also dismiss it as an action.
    • •Sound: whisper to scream volume. Any sound, including voices. It can be continuous or come at different times.
    • •Image: an object no larger than a 5-foot cube. No sound, light, smell, or other sensory effect.
    • •Physical interaction reveals the image as an illusion, because things pass through it.
    • •A creature that uses its action (2024: the Study action) to examine the illusion makes an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. On a success, the illusion becomes faint to that creature.
    • •It has no verbal component, so you can cast it while unable to speak.

    Synergies

    • •Disguise Self: Fake a voice with Minor Illusion while wearing someone else's face.
    • •Darkness and Dancing Lights: Lights draw eyes, and your sound or image fills in the story.
    • •Stealth-heavy parties: One fake noise can move a patrol long enough for the rogue to slip past.
    • •Familiar or Mage Hand: Combine a believable sound with small real movements so the scene feels real.

    Anti-Patterns

    • •Casting it in combat every round instead of attacking. One good trick beats several weak ones.
    • •Making a fake wall in a hallway enemies will walk through.
    • •Using a voice the target knows well and getting caught by a detail you did not know.

    Tactical Modules

    • •Patrol Lure. When to use: Guards block your path. Synergy: Make a noise behind them, then move while they look.
    • •Fake Cover. When to use: You need to hide in an open room. Synergy: Make a crate or boulder, then ask the DM whether you can hide behind it.
    • •Fake Trap Sign. When to use: You want enemies to avoid a spot. Synergy: Create an image of a pressure plate or blood stains on the floor.

    Countermeasures

    • •Threat: An enemy examines the illusion — Response: Use sounds that are hard to disprove from a distance. Fallback: Recast it elsewhere, which ends the first one.
    • •Threat: An enemy touches the image — Response: Place images out of reach. Fallback: Have the next action ready, since the trick is over.
    • •Threat: The enemy has truesight — Response: Expect it to see through illusions. Fallback: Use stealth or real obstacles instead.

Minor Illusion in the 2024 Rules

The 2024 Minor Illusion works almost the same. It is still a sound or an image of an object up to a 5-foot cube, 30-foot range, 1 minute, with somatic and material components only. The class list is still Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard.

Two details changed. A creature examines the illusion with the Study action, the 2024 action for Intelligence checks like Investigation. And the line about dismissing the illusion as an action is gone. It now ends early only if you cast the spell again.

Forest gnomes in the 2024 rules know Minor Illusion as part of their Gnomish Lineage.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What can you do with Minor Illusion in 5e?

You can create one sound or one image of an object within 30 feet for 1 minute. Common uses are luring guards with noises, faking voices, making fake crates or doors to hide behind, and leaving false footprints.

Can Minor Illusion make a creature in 5e?

No. The image must be an object, such as a chair or a chest. You can make the sound of a creature, but not its image.

Can you hide behind Minor Illusion in 5e?

Possibly. An image of a crate or boulder can block line of sight for creatures that believe it. Whether that lets you take the Hide action is up to your DM. The image does not stop attacks or spells.

Can Minor Illusion make sound and image at the same time?

No. You choose a sound or an image each time you cast it. Casting it again to add the other ends the first illusion.

Can Minor Illusion create light in 5e?

No. The image cannot create sound, light, smell, or any other sensory effect. A fake torch would not light anything.

How do you see through Minor Illusion in 5e?

A creature can touch it, since things pass through the image. Or it can use its action to examine the illusion and make an Intelligence (Investigation) check against the caster's spell save DC. On a success, the illusion becomes faint to that creature.

Is Minor Illusion concentration in 5e?

No. It lasts 1 minute without concentration. It ends early if you cast it again.

Does Minor Illusion need verbal components?

No. It only has somatic and material components, a bit of fleece. You can cast it while gagged or unable to speak.
