Wand of Secrets 5e: Finding Traps and Secret Doors, One Charge at a Time
The Wand of Secrets in 5e is an uncommon wand that anyone can use, no attunement needed. It has 3 charges and regains 1d3 each dawn. Spend a charge with an action (a Magic action in 2024), and if a secret door or trap is within 30 feet of you (60 feet in 2024), the wand pulses and points at the nearest one. It tells you where, not what. Verdict: a cheap insurance policy for trap-heavy dungeons, best in the hands of whoever walks in front.
Ten sessions from now, will anyone remember who's carrying the Wand of Secrets? Loreify turns your session audio into notes, NPC lists and quotes in 5-10 minutes.

The wand has 3 charges. While holding it, you can use an action to expend 1 of its charges, and if a secret door or trap is within 30 feet of you, the wand pulses and points at the one nearest to you. The wand regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn.
This wand has 3 charges and regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. While holding it, you can take a Magic action to expend 1 charge, and if a secret door or trap is within 60 feet of you, the wand pulses and points at the one nearest to you.
The only real change is range: 30 feet became 60 feet.
How the Wand of Secrets Works
One charge, one answer
You hold the wand and spend a charge. If no secret door or trap is in range, nothing happens and the charge is gone. If one or more is in range, the wand points at whichever is nearest to you. To find the second-nearest, deal with the first (or move), then spend another charge.
A pulse tells you something is there. It doesn't tell you whether it's a door or a trap, what the trap does, or how to open the door. You still find and handle it the usual way. In the 2024 SRD's example traps, that means a Search action and a Wisdom (Perception) check (DC 11 to spot a collapsing roof's trip wire) or a Study action and an Intelligence (Investigation) check (DC 15 for a hidden pit's lid). Knowing exactly where to look won't change the DC as written, but it tells you where to spend the action.
Charges and recharge
Three charges, 1d3 back each dawn, so 2 on average. Burn all three every day and you'll start the next day with 1, 2 or 3, each a one-in-three chance. The wand doesn't crumble or risk destruction on its last charge, so there's no reason to save one.
Walls, floors and line of sight
The only condition in the text is distance: a secret door or trap "within 30 feet of you" (60 in 2024). It doesn't require line of sight, and unlike Detect Magic or Find Traps it lists nothing that blocks it, so walls, floors and lead don't matter. The wand points at the nearest one, which can be behind a wall or on the floor above. That makes the 60-foot 2024 wand good for finding secret rooms from the corridor outside.
What counts as a trap?
The wand doesn't define "trap." The Find Traps spell defines one for its own purposes: something created to cause damage or danger, which includes a Glyph of Warding or Alarm spell and a mechanical pit, but not a natural weakness in the floor, an unstable ceiling or a sinkhole. DM ruling: use the same definition. The wand finds glyphs and pressure plates, not rotten floorboards. Hidden compartments and false-bottomed chests are a judgment call; if it was built to be hidden, treat it as a secret door.
Who can use it
No attunement, and no class requirement. The fighter or rogue in front of the marching order can carry it, and it never costs anyone an attunement slot.

Doubling the range quadruples the area on a flat floor, from a 30-foot radius to a 60-foot one, and 60 feet covers most dungeon rooms from the doorway. In 2014 you check one stretch of corridor at a time; in 2024 one charge often covers a whole room.
Is the Wand of Secrets Worth It?
Yes, in dungeon-heavy campaigns, because it costs nothing to carry. Compare the SRD alternatives:
Find Traps and the wand cover each other's blind spots: the spell tells you a trap is in view and roughly what it does but not where, and the wand points at it.
Less useful: in campaigns that are mostly wilderness or city, or when the DM rarely uses traps. Then it's a curiosity that sits in a pack. Pass it on rather than spend a reward on it.
Wand of Secrets for DMs
Placement. Uncommon and useless without traps, so place it at the start of a trap-heavy dungeon, maybe in the pack of a dead adventurer who didn't use it in time.
What it does to your dungeon. It removes the "gotcha" from traps. That's fine; the 2024 SRD's own trap advice says traps nobody can detect or escape are rarely fun. What still works: traps the party knows about and must get past (a pit across the only corridor), traps that go off when the party is busy fighting, and secret doors that need a puzzle to open even after they're found.
Answering a pulse. Point the wand at the nearest one and say nothing else. Let the players decide whether it's a door or a trap. Ask where they approach from, then call for the Search or Study check.
Pricing. 400 GP under the 2024 SRD; the 2014 SRD has no prices. The magic item generator can make a variant that points at something stranger, like hidden treasure, if your table wants one.
Hooks.
•The wand pulses in an empty, ordinary-looking inn room. The innkeeper insists there's nothing there.
•A rival party's thief carries a Wand of Secrets, and every dungeon the heroes reach has already been looted of its secret rooms.
•The wand points straight down from the town square, toward a vault nobody remembers building.
Where the wand pointed, and what was behind the wall, is easy to forget by next week. Loreify records your session and writes the recap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Wand of Secrets require attunement?
No. It's an uncommon wand with no attunement in either edition, so anyone can use it.

30 feet in the 2014 rules and 60 feet in the 2024 rules. It points at the nearest secret door or trap within that range.

400 GP under the 2024 SRD, the value of any uncommon magic item. The 2014 SRD gives no prices for magic items.
