How do you name a changeling?

Give them a short, simple birth name — often a single syllable — for use among other changelings, then any number of assumed names for the personas they adopt. Changeling names are meant to be adaptable, so keep the true name plain and the aliases whatever the disguise needs.

Do changelings have real names?

Yes, though it’s usually private. A changeling’s true birth name is typically short and known only to close kin or other changelings, while the wider world only ever meets the names attached to their disguises.

Why do changelings have many names?

Shapeshifting is central to changeling life, and each face they wear tends to come with its own name. Collecting identities is practical and cultural — it lets them move between communities freely — so a well-traveled changeling accumulates a long list of aliases.

What do changeling names sound like?

True names are short and understated — Bin, Fife, Ora — nothing that draws attention. Their assumed names simply match whatever persona they’re inhabiting, so a changeling’s "sound" is really the sound of the people they’re imitating.

Mastering Changeling Names

Naming Best Practices

•Changelings often have multiple names - a true name and various personas
•True names tend to be simple, one or two syllables describing personality traits
•Personas names match the culture they're imitating perfectly
•Many changelings use virtue or concept names (Shade, Jest, Whisper)
•Names might reflect their primary mask or most common identity
•Some changelings collect names like others collect coins
•Family names are rare - changelings often adopt them as needed
•Consider creating a name that works across multiple gender presentations
•Changeling communities may use names that reference transformation

Changeling Identity & Naming

Changeling naming is unique among D&D races as it reflects their shapeshifting nature and complex relationship with identity. A changeling typically has a true name used only among their own kind or trusted companions, which often describes a core aspect of their personality or a defining moment. These names are usually simple concepts like 'Shift,' 'Form,' or 'Face.' Beyond this, changelings develop personas - complete identities with appropriate names for different situations. A single changeling might be Thomas the merchant, Elara the bard, and Grimjaw the mercenary. Some changelings become so attached to certain personas that those names become more real than their true names. In changeling communities, names might reference famous personas or transformation concepts.

How to name a changeling

Changelings are shapeshifters who collect names the way they collect faces. Most have a short, simple birth name — often a single syllable — used among other changelings, plus a growing set of assumed names, one for each persona they wear out in the world.

Because a changeling’s identity is fluid, their names tend to be adaptable and unremarkable — easy to borrow, blend in, or discard. When they slip into a disguise, they take a name to match, so a changeling adventurer might answer to a dozen different names over a single campaign.

Changeling name styles

Style	Notes / examples
Birth name	Short, often one syllable — Bin, Fife, Nib, Ora
Assumed names	Borrowed to fit a persona or disguise
